EuropeanVoice.com

European Voice is intent on ensuring that its website is as easy to use and offers as rich an experience as possible. The website is, then, a work in progress. You will see new elements added continuously; we hope those changes will mean you can find whatever you need after just a few clicks – and a lot more of interest besides.

Frequently asked questions

Do you need help using our website? Are you having problems? The issues you have may well have been issues that others have had, and so we have listed some of the questions frequently asked of us:

When is content on EuropeanVoice.com updated?

Every day. Web-exclusives – mainly news and commentaries – are published on a rolling basis, ensuring that you will find fresh content on the site every day.

The major publication day is, however, Thursday. That is when the newspaper is printed and its content uploaded onto the website. You can expect to see all fresh material from the newspaper on the website by mid-day on Thursday.

Is there material on the website that I can't find in the print edition?
Yes. We produce fresh news and commentaries every day.

What does the  You need an active subscription to read this article symbol mean?
That icon indicates that an article is available only to subscribers. The many benefits of subscribing are given in our subscriptions section, as well, of course, as step-by-step guidance on becoming a subscriber. Subscribers are entitled to read everything published on EuropeanVoice.com.

I can't read articles on the site.
You probably have not registered with us.

Registered users have access to all articles published in the past three months. (However, registered users have access to articles published in the latest newspaper only after seven days.) Registration is easy and only requires you to enter an e-mail address and fill out a few details. All data is treated confidentially.

Subscribers have access to all articles on EuropeanVoice.com. Subscribers do, though, need to log in, by entering their log-in (usually, an e-mail address) and their password.

I can't read articles that appeared in the newspaper.
For the first week after publication, articles published in the newspaper are available only to subscribers.

I'm a subscriber, but I can't get into an article.
Subscribers have the right to see all content on EuropeanVoice.com. However, to do so, subscribers must log in, using their log-in and their password. (The log-in for new subscribers is the e-mail address given to us; the log-in for long-standing subscribers is their customer number. If you cannot remember your customer number, look at a copy of the newspaper: the number appears alongside your address.)

If you are a large, institutional subscriber with multiple subscriptions, please contact us. We may be able to provide alternative options for you.

I can't find an article that appeared in the newspaper.

All articles printed in European Voice are available on the site. Given the number of articles we publish, even articles only a few days old may move quickly off the home page. We have tried to make them as visible as possible for as long as possible, with navigation by type (our News, Analysis, Comment sections are particularly popular) and by theme (via our Policies page). You can also find old articles through our Search function. A simple search is visible on each page, and each page has a link to our Advanced Search page, where you search by date and relevance.

I know the exact date on which an article was published. Can I search by newspaper edition?

We do not have a search function that allows you to search by edition. However, all our articles – roughly 30,000, stretching back to 1995 – are accessible via simple and Advanced Search functions.  Many of our articles are also listed by subject, on our Polices page. Past special reports can be browsed in our Special Reports page. We have also grouped together past columns; they can be found in the Columns sub-section, but also in the easy-navigation section that you can find across the website.

Are special reports available in electronic format?

Not at present. However, subscribers can download the entire newspaper in a pdf format. You can find the electronic version of the newspaper on the top right-hand corner of the home page.

I can't download the pdf of the newspaper.
The pdf version of the newspaper is available only to subscribers.

Subscribers must log into the site in order to download the newspaper. (Just click on the Log-in button at the top of the page, and enter your e-mail address and password.)

Can I change my password over the phone?
No. You can change you password on the internet by going to My EV and following the instructions on the Change E-mail and Password page.

If you have persistent problems changing your password, please contact us by sending an e-mail to evsubscriptions@economist.com.

How can I register?
Just go to our Register page. A small amount of information is mandatory. We do encourage you, though, to fill out the Optional Information section as well; that information is collected in order to provide a better service to our readers.

Is that the end of the registration process?
No. Once you have filled out the information required on the Register page, you will be sent a confirmation e-mail. That contains a link that you should either click on or copy into the address bar in your browser. That is, of course, a security measure.

I've forgotten my password. What should I do?
Go to My EV (in the right-hand corner of the top navigation bar visible on each page). There, click on Log-in or Change E-mail and Password. Enter your e-mail address and press the button. You will then receive an e-mail containing an automatically generated password, which will then need to be confirmed (either by clicking on the enclosed link or by copying that link into the address bar of your browser). If you want to personalise your password, you will need to go through the process of changing your e-mail outlined below.

How can I change my password?
Go to My EV (in the right-hand corner of the top navigation bar visible on each page). There, click on Change E-mail and Password and follow the instructions on that page. You will then receive a confirmation e-mail. That will contain a link that you will need to click on to activate the change.

I have registered and clicked on the activation link that I received by e-mail. However, I was informed that the activation process failed. What can I do?
We believe that your e-mail browser (reader) may have cut the activation link contained in the confirmation e-mail that you received. The solution is probably simple: copy and paste the link into the bar where you normally enter a website address (the URL / address / location bar).

I have registered successfully but I have not received a confirmation e-mail. Why?
There is no single answer. We have tested the system and believe that the reason for your problem is probably one of a number of potential problems that are beyond our control:

- There are sometimes problems connecting with outgoing or incoming mail servers;
- There may be a mail server problem on our side or on your side;
- The e-mail may have been delayed for reasons related to network congestion between servers;
- There may be problems with your mailbox: for example, your mailbox may be full, or you may have a spam filter on.
- An accident: You may accidentally have deleted the confirmation e-mail. Check in the trash can on the desktop of your computer to see if that has happened in this case.

What is the best browser to use?
Readers who use Firefox and Safari are currently experiencing some glitches. These are minor, but, for the best experience, you may wish to use Internet Explorer.
