OSI Statement on Fraudulent Email
December 18, 2007

The Open Society Institute has learned of several types of fraudulent email messages that have misappropriated the name of George Soros and/or the Soros Foundation to extract money or personal information from unsuspecting recipients.

This kind of fraud is typically designed to deceive recipients into revealing personal information such as home address, telephone number, credit card and bank account numbers to identity thieves. Often the message claims that the recipient has been chosen to receive a cash grant or donation (or has been invited to attend a conference at which George Soros will speak).

OSI and its affiliated entities in the Soros foundations network do not and will not distribute unsolicited email requesting this type of information. Please be advised that the Soros foundations network and OSI are in no way associated with or responsible for these messages.
