IMMEDIATE RELEASE No. 062-06
January 23, 2006

Alan Greenspan Receives Defense Department Distinguished Public Service Award

Secretary Of Defense Donald Rumsfeld presented the Department of Defense Medal for Distinguished Public Service to Alan Greenspan today.

The citation for the award reads:

“Dr. Alan Greenspan is recognized for distinguished public service as Chairman, United States Federal Reserve, from August 1987 to January 2006.  Dr. Greenspan contributed enormously to a strong national defense by helping to promote the continued strength and steady growth of the economy of the United States.  As a result of his leadership, the United States remained prosperous and free, as Americans were more capable of providing for their national security through important investments in the Armed Forces.  The general investment climate that Dr. Greenspan fostered helped to ensure that the United States remained a leader in technological innovation, further enhancing the nation's security and that of our partners and allies around the world.  Dr. Greenspan's success in establishing a stable monetary policy helped to create an expanding investor class in the United States, including men and women in uniform who are better able to secure financial security for themselves and their families as a result.  The vision, leadership, and ability that Dr. Greenspan displayed during his unprecedented tenure as the Chairman of the Federal Reserve of the United States reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Government.”
