Teacher Training: Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL)

CLED’s Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) Certificate Program is an innovative combination of on-line and on-site classes to give you the best of both worlds. Our teacher-trainees enjoy not only the convenience and flexibility of an on-line course but also the dynamic interaction of an in-person practicum.

The course is taught on-line from Jan 5 through May 15, 2009. Students are in contact with the instructor up to 3 times a week through an Internet-based system which can be logged into from anywhere in the world. In addition to participating in on-line classes, trainees also observe English classes in their local neighborhood.

After completing the on-line program, trainees come to Georgetown University to participate in an intensive one-week practicum that includes class observation and teaching practice. Our curriculum emphasizes Communicative Language Teaching and focuses on the practical application of foundation theory. During the practicum, trainees teach lessons using the principles learned in the course.

Trainees must successfully complete both the on-line program and the practicum in order to receive the GU-TEFL Certificate. At the end of the program, our graduates are able to enter the job market with not only a TEFL certificate from Georgetown University, but also a substantial teaching portfolio that clearly demonstrates the skills and knowledge acquired.
