Less Than Jake announce spring tour dates

Tuesday January 13, 2009

Leading up to their run on this summer’s Warped Tour, Less Than Jake have announced a spring tour with the Expendables.

2008 was a big year for LTJ. In spring, the band launched its own label, Sleep It Off. In addition for being a vehicle for the band’s new releases going forward, it provids a home for them to release a bunch of their old albums, repackaged with new materials.

If you’re not going to be able to catch these guys on the Warped Tour, or even if you are, you may want to consider seeing them if they come through your town. The band’s combination of smart songwriting and high-energy makes for a fun evening.

Spring tour dates are listed below. Read more...

Oxide Flake - A collection of live recordings from the '80s available for free download

Monday January 12, 2009

This is the sort of blog site that I’d like to see more of.

Oxide Flake is a collection of live recordings taken from punk, hardcore and thrash shows in Lawrence, KS and Kansas City, MO in the mid-‘80s.

Among the decent (and growing) collections are recordings of an old Husker Du show and a performance by Black Flag.

I know that back in the day there were a lot of people going to old punk and hardcore shows and recording them, compiling them on cassettes that were then passed around for everyone to enjoy.

It was an integral part of DIY culture, spreading the music of punk bands along with the energy of their live performances to kids who didn’t make it out to the shows.

I know the mind behind Oxide Flake isn’t the sole proprietor of extensive collections of live recordings collecting dust on deteriorating audio cassettes, and I hope that others with similar collections will see this site and get the idea to digitize and share their collections with the punk community on the interwebs.

SXSW releases a preliminary list of bands for 2009

Thursday January 8, 2009

It’s still snowing here in the Motor City, and times like these have me dreaming of warmer climes.

Fortunately, I’ve been given something to look forward to, as the folks at SXSW have released the first list of bands that will be performing in Austin in March.

The list is already extensive, and it’s just a drop in the bucket!

While I’ve not had a chance to wade entirely through the list I am immediately struck by three names that have made the preliminary list:

  • The Sonics – This legendary garage punk band started in the Pacific Northwest in the ‘60s, taking what their peers like Paul Revere and the Raiders were playing and reinterpreting it in a rougher, cruder fashion. As much as I like to point at pioneers like the MC5 and the Stooges for sculpting punk rock in the states, the Sonics take just as much credit. (MySpace Site)
  • Mika Miko – Raw, noisy girl-powered punk rock from L.A., Mika Miko play punk rock like you remember from a few years back. Think Black Flag and the Bad Brains blended with feminine wiles and you’re on the right track. (MySpace Site)
  • This Bike is a Pipe Bomb – This is a band I’ve tried to catch before only to have been thwarted. Perhaps 2009 is my year. This Bike is a Pipe Bomb are a political folk-punk band out of Florida that have been going for over 10 years now. Their 2004 release, Dance Party With This Bike is a Pipe Bomb is on regular rotation around here, and I’ve heard enough about the energy of their live sets to know I must see them. (MySpace Site)

Like I said, this is just a small portion of a huge list, and that list is just a small portion of a huger list.

I have posted the list as it stands below for your perusing pleasure. What stands out for you? Let us know, and we’ll try to catch them when we’re in Austin this March. Read more...
