What's Opera Doc?

Warner Bros. Cartoon Characters

Before Baby Einstein or Disney's Little Einsteins, America's youth was introduced to classical music of Piotr Tchaikovsky, Edvard Grieg and Johann Strauss from watching Saturday morning cartoons.

With Warner Bros. Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies cartoons and then-MGM's Hanna-Barbera shorts, classical music were a perfect accompaniment to the antics of Bugs Bunny, Elmer Fudd, and Tom and Jerry.

Members from the Sacramento Opera will explore how classical music was introduced into America's youth this Saturday at the Sierra 2 Center.

When: Jan. 10, noon and 2 p.m.
Where: Sierra 2 Center, Curtis Hall, 2791 24th St., Sac.
Cost: Free.
More info: (916) 808-1182

This event is recommended for kids ages 6 to 12.

Watch some of my favorite Warner Bros. cartoons featuring familiar classical works from YouTube.com.

  • A Corny Concerto - Two of Johann Strauss' waltzes - "The Blue Danube" and "Tales from the Vienna Woods" - are featured in this cartoon with Porky Pig, Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd.
  • Rabbit of Seville - Gioachino Rossini's "Barber of Seville" is played throughout this episode where Elmer Fudd chases Bugs Bunny.
  • Rhapsody Rabbit - Bugs Bunny plays Franz Liszt's "Hungarian Rhapsody."
  • What's Opera Doc? - Elmer Fudd and Bugs Bunny perform in an opera as Richard Wagner's music.

A very sweet lady told me today that she got engaged over the holiday. And her great news inspired today's post to tell all newly engaged brides and grooms about the upcoming Bridal Showcase.

When: Jan. 11, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Where: Cal Expo, Expo Center Building 1-8, Exposition Blvd., Sac. Enter Main Gate.
Cost: Parking is $8. Admission is $10. Get a $2 off coupon online.
More info: (800) 787-2248

When I was planning my wedding a few years ago, I attended this event and found a lot of useful information on catering, decor, photography, floral arrangement and attire from the countless vendors. Touted as California's largest bridal show, the Bridal Showcase takes over eight buildings at Cal Expo. So this is a mega-bridal fare.

Despite the size, try not to be intimidated. Mostly everyone who are attending are on the same ship; all are daunted by the task at hand. So as a now married person, I've provided a brief planning guide - Bridal Fair Tips - to help navigate through your first, among many for sure, bridal fairs.

If you can't make it to this one, the organizers will also have another Bridal Showcase scheduled at the Stockton Civic Auditorium in Stockton on January 25 and a to be announced event at the Dixon Fairgrounds in Dixon.
