Theses & Dissertations

All doctoral students, or students in a master's program who are required or opt to write a thesis, must file a Thesis or Dissertation Proposal Form with the Graduate School prior to defending the thesis or dissertation and preferably in the first semester of Thesis Research. The form should outline the proposed topic and method of study and include a preliminary bibliography. If the research involves human subjects, the student is required to follow the procedure for obtaining approval from the Institutional Review Board (IRB) and to indicate the IRB-C approval number on the Thesis or Dissertation Proposal Form.

Students should consult the Guidelines for Dissertation and Thesis Writers before beginning the thesis or dissertation and should adhere to these formatting and procedural requirements during its preparation. Following these guidelines will ensure successful submission of the thesis or dissertation to the Graduate School and timely award of the degree.

Doctoral students, and master's students who are required to orally defend their theses, should submit a Thesis Reviewers Report to the Graduate School. This form must be signed by the student's advisor and committee members (faxed or electronic signatures are acceptable) and is due one week prior to the scheduled oral defense. In addition, doctoral students must post their defense information to the Doctoral Dissertation Defense Schedule.

Before final submission of the thesis or dissertation to the Graduate School, the student should obtain the signatures of his or her advisor, committee members, and Director of Graduate Studies on the appropriate Thesis Coversheet. Students should schedule submission of the thesis or dissertation with Ms. Christine Quigley, although walk-ins will be accommodated. Ms. Quigley will check the thesis or dissertation while the student waits, usually in about a half hour or less. If accepted, she will post the appropriate thesis processing fee to the student's account: $25 for a master's thesis, $90 for a doctoral dissertation, or $135 for a doctoral dissertation including optional copyright registration (see below). The fee should be paid promptly so that the processing of the thesis and the award of the degree may proceed.

Doctoral students must submit two additional hard-copy forms that may be picked up in advance from the Graduate School. The Survey of Earned Doctorates asks for information that is collected for statistical purposes. Publishing Your Dissertation, also known as the "Microfilm Agreement," consists of three parts: (1) authorization to allow ProQuest to microfilm and digitize the dissertation, which will then be made available on their website, (2) optional authorization for ProQuest to register copyright registration of the work, and (3) an order form to purchase bound copies of the dissertation if desired.

A student who is off-site may make arrangements to mail the thesis or dissertation to the Graduate School, as long as it is accompanied by the signed Coversheet and arrives by the appropriate deadline. Theses and dissertations must be accepted by the Graduate School before the end of the last business day of the month in which the degree is to be awarded, except for the month of May, in which they are due no later than the first business day of May.

Further information about these requirements may be found in the Graduate Bulletin and questions may be directed to the Graduate Student Services staff.
