Sydney Airport brawl witness question lack of security

Witnesses to an "appalling" biker brawl in which a Hells Angel was fatally battered have criticised security at Sydney Airport.

Authorities are considering new tactics to crack down on bikie gangs after public outbreaks of violence across Sydney that have left one man dead and two others injured.

A group of about 20 "beefed up" men, described by one witness as sportsmen or bodybuilders, launched the deadly attack at Sydney Airport, with some of the attackers arming themselves with steel bollards.

As investigations continue into the brawl, airport security has been criticised.

One witness who had just arrived in Sydney on a flight from Brisbane said that well before the fight began it was obvious "something was about to kick off".

"I was appalled that there was no security there," said the woman, who asked not to be named.

"There were a group of men going at each other with lots of families and children in the area and no one to look after the other passengers."

Police said the fight broke out about 1.35pm after a group of men disembarked from a flight.

The dead man has been named by some media outlets as the brother of a Hells Angels gang member, and Comancheros gang members have also been linked to the fracas.

The fight followed a spate of drive-by shootings across suburban Sydney during which homes have been sprayed with gunfire.

Two men, aged 18 and 17, inside a home at Auburn in Sydney's west were injured when the property was targeted about 1am yesterday.

Investigators say the shooting could be linked to bikie gang violence.

Police Minister Tony Kelly has described Sunday's airport attack as "intolerable" and "disgusting".

He will be meeting Attorney-General John Hatzistergos, Premier Nathan Rees and Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione today for a police briefing on bikie gangs.

"We'll be going through whatever legislation the police require," Mr Kelly told ABC Radio.

Four men have been charged with affray in connection with the airport brawl and are due to appear in court on Monday. Continued...
