Standing together against HIV and AIDS

Angola

Public service announcements talking about HIV and AIDS

We worked in partnership with the Angolan National AIDS Commission, Radio Nacional de Angola, Angolan State Television and a range of international and Angolan NGOs to produce a national, mass media campaign to encourage young people in Angola to protect their sexual health.

The campaign focused on raising awareness of how to prevent the spread of HIV and AIDS. Challenging discrimination against people living with HIV and AIDS was also a key objective.

Start date: 2005
End date: June 2008
Media types: television, radio, public service announcements, mobile phones, music, posters, press advertisements, special events
Issue: health
Country: Angola

The campaign used radio, television, music, short films, events, newspapers, billboards, posters and mobile phones to raise awareness of how the HIV virus is transmitted, and how infection can be prevented.

Challenging discrimination against people living with HIV and AIDS was also a key objective of the campaign.

Interactive radio programmes

Mo Kamba - interactive radio programme

The centrepiece of our HIV and AIDS prevention work in Angola was an interactive radio programme for young people, Mo Kamba ('My Mate').

Mo Kamba used discussion, music, guest appearances by local celebrities and live calls from listeners to get 15-24 year olds talking about HIV and AIDS. More

Teste Viju - radio quiz show

I learned a lesson from ‘Teste Viju': life doesn't end when you get HIV and that we shouldn't discriminate against people living with HIV.

Benguela, focus group participant, Angola

In August 2006, we began working with the Angolan Ministry of Youth and Sports, UNICEF and the state broadcaster, Radio Nacional Angola (RNA) to produce and broadcast ' Teste Viju', a radio quiz show designed to raise awareness of HIV and AIDS among 15-24 year olds.

It put their knowledge of HIV and AIDS to the test, posing questions that they had to answer correctly in order to progress further. More

Public Service Announcements (PSAs)

Radio PSAs

In August 2005, we began working in partnership with RNA to produce public service announcements (PSAs) about HIV and AIDS in eight languages.

The PSAs featured Angolan celebrities, such as pop stars and members of the national football team, talking about HIV and AIDS. More

Television PSAs

Five television PSAs were produced, and broadcast in collaboration with Angolan State Television. Each PSA was scripted to reflect the reality of Angolan life and its people, featuring easily identifiable characters from across the country. More

Innovative advertising

Advertisements, colour posters, banners and text messages were also used to promote the campaign. More

Raising awareness through music

We collaborated with Angola's latest generation of musicians to produce music with lyrics about sexual health and HIV prevention.

In 2006, we developed, produced and distributed 5,000 copies of a 6-track CD. The CD included 'Kuduro', a form of African house music that was born in Angola in the 1990s and has rapidly become fashionable among European DJs. More

Research and impact

Our research team in Angola carried out a survey of 15-24 year olds in four provinces across the country in early 2006 to establish the reach and impact of Mo Kamba and our public service announcements. More

Training

The most exciting training scheme in my entire life...

Training programme participant

We worked with international and local radio consultants to train Angolan radio production teams at RNA, affiliate radio stations, and the Mo Kamba team - all young Angolans representative of the programme's target audience.

Training included formal sessions and workshops and on the job training. More
