The ECB's Governing Council decreases interest rates by 25 basis points -
At a meeting held on 2 April 2009 the Governing Council of the ECB took the following monetary policy decisions:
1. The interest rate on the main refinancing operations of the Eurosystem will be decreased by 25 basis points to 1.25%, starting from the operation to be settled on 8 April 2009.
2. The interest rate on the marginal lending facility will be decreased by 25 basis points to 2.25%, with effect from 8 April 2009.
3. The interest rate on the deposit facility will be decreased by 25 basis points to 0.25%, with effect from 8 April 2009.

Central Bank of Malta Quarterly Review: Fourth Issue 2008 -
The Central Bank of Malta has published the fourth issue of its Quarterly Review for 2008, which analyses economic and financial developments in Malta and abroad during the third quarter of 2008 and into the fourth. Additionally, the Review carries a speech delivered by the Governor at the Institute of Financial Services Annual Dinner on the implications of the international financial crisis for Malta.

Issue of €2 commemorative coin -
The Central Bank of Malta has issued its first €2 commemorative coin on 5 January 2009. The coin commemorates the 10th anniversary of Economic and Monetary Union. Each euro area country has issued a similar coin bearing the same design but with the name of the country and the legend ‘EMU 1999-2009’ shown in the respective language. The Maltese euro coin has the legend ‘UEM 1999-2009’, where the letters UEM stand for ‘Unjoni Ekonomika u Monetarja’.

Exchange of Maltese lira at the Central Bank of Malta -
The Central Bank of Malta will continue to exchange, at the irrevocably fixed conversion rate and without charge, Maltese lira coins until 1 February 2010 and Maltese lira banknotes until 31 January 2018.
The public is also asked to take note that exchanges are conducted only at the Bank’s Annex at St James’s Counterguard, Valletta, which is easily accessible from the bus terminus at City Gate.
