Print

Steps to install

Google Chrome is an open-source web browser built to support web applications and search with speed and stability. It's currently available for Windows XP and Windows Vista. (Mac and Linux versions are being developed, so stay tuned.) To install the Windows version for your user account, follow these steps below.

  1. Visit http://www.google.com/chrome
  2. Click the Download Google Chrome button. Downloading the installer file from this location ensures that you'll be able to get updates, security fixes, and access to all of Google Chrome's features.
  3. Review the Terms of Service, then click the Accept and Install button to continue.

You can opt to send Google crash reports and statistics on how often you use Google Chrome features by selecting the checkbox at the bottom. Information that is sent doesn't include personal information, such as name, email address, or Google Account information, or the URLs of pages you visit.

  4. Once the installation finishes, the 'Welcome to Google Chrome' dialog box appears. Click the Start Google Chrome button to finish the default installation or click the Customize these settings link to choose specific installation options.
  5. Google Chrome opens automatically after the importing process completes. Browse our Getting Started Guide to learn about Google Chrome's features.

Installation options

You can determine how browser shortcuts, search engines, and importing of browser data should be handled. Click a link below to see more details about default and customized installation options.

Default installation options

If you click the Start Google Chrome button, the browser automatically finishes the installation process by importing your bookmarks, home page, browsing history, and saved passwords from your current default browser (Firefox or Internet Explorer). It also adds Google Chrome shortcuts to your Start menu, desktop, and Quick launch bar on your computer.

You can stop the importing process at any time by clicking the Stop import button. You can always import your browser information or set Google Chrome as your default browser at a later time. We're currently unable to import settings from other browsers aside from Firefox or Internet Explorer.

Customized installation options

If you want to choose specific installation settings, click the Customize these settings link in the 'Welcome to Google Chrome' dialog box.

Importing

Choose one of the following importing options:

  • If you don't want to import browser information, such as your bookmarks, home page, browsing history, and saved passwords, at this point, deselect the 'Import settings from' checkbox.
  • To import information from a different browser, select the 'Import settings from' checkbox and use the drop-down menu to select either Internet Explorer or Firefox. We're currently unable to import from other browsers aside from Firefox or Internet Explorer .

Default browser

The 'Make Google Chrome the default browser' checkbox is selected automatically. If you'd rather use another browser to open links by default, deselect the checkbox.

Shortcuts

Icons that launch Google Chrome can be created and placed on your computer desktop, Start menu, and Quick launch bar. Deselect checkboxes for locations where you don't want shortcut icons to appear. After you've finished customizing your installation options, click the OK button.

Default search engine options

Google Chrome keeps the default search engine setting from Firefox or Internet Explorer if you imported your settings during installation. If you didn't import settings, then the browser sets Google to be your default search engine. The initial bubble that appears for the address box lets you adjust your search engine options.

To use a different search engine, click the Change search engine button in the bubble. This opens the 'Google Chrome Options' dialog box, where you can use the 'Default search' drop-down menu in the 'Basics' tab to choose another search engine. If you didn't import any browser settings, this drop-down menu will be empty. Learn how to add more search engine options. When you're done, click the Close button.

Now you're all set to enjoy the Google Chrome experience while browsing the Internet. Be sure to check out the Getting Started Guide to learn more about its features. Enjoy!
