Sunday Business Post: Irish Troops Could be in for Long Haul in Chad

An EU force, which included over 400 Irish troops, was deployed to Chad with a United Nations mandate to protect civilians, including displaced Chadians and refugees from Darfur in neighbouring Sudan. While land-grabbing and displacement are major problems, the EU force had a very specific mandate to protect displaced persons and refugees, rather than take on a broader policing role.
