The Turkmenistan Project promotes civil society in Turkmenistan via grantmaking and programmatic activities in areas such as arts and culture, access to information, and public health.

The Open Society Institute supports civil society development in Turkmenistan in part through a small grants program administered by the Central Eurasia Project's Turkmenistan Project.

Turkmenistan's government announced this week that more than 70 foreign companies had applied to take part in a tender to construct the East-West pipeline from Turkmenistan's rich Southern Yolotan gas field to external markets.

The fallout from a gas pipeline explosion April 9 in Turkmenistan continues to create tensions between Russia and Turkmenistan, and the gas is still not flowing. Russian Energy Minister Sergei Shmatko said May 19 that the two countries have been haggling over compensation terms, but seemed confident that Ashgabat was now sending positive signals.
