Toshiba to release Blu-ray player

19 July 2009 17:47 by Andre "DVDBack23" Yoskowitz | 6 comments

Toshiba to release Blu-ray player AfterDawn readers will undoubtedly remember the Blu-ray versus HD DVD format war that ended last November with the demise of the HD DVD format.

Toshiba, the main backer of the format, supposedly lost $1 billion USD as a result of the "war."

Today, the Japanese company announced they will be releasing their first Blu-ray player, the BD-18, by the end of the year. There were no other details about specifications or the aesthetics of the player.

Since the demise of HD DVD, Toshiba has never fully embraced their once-rival, but it appears that strong growth in the format has led Toshiba to finally move on.

So where's the link to the Toshiba announcement?

All I've seen anywhere is reports of a Japanese report claiming Toshiba have announced they are going to make a Blu-ray player.

I'm not saying I don't believe it (although I doubt Blu-ray is making any CE corp any money right now, not when the R&D; is taken account of) I'd just like to see what this is based on that isn't hearsay.

This should be a good player if Toshiba integrates their "upconverting technology" into it, as they did with their HD-DVD players.

I can't wait till this blu-ray player hits the market! I have a Toshiba lcd and upconverting dvd player and I love them both. A Toshiba blu-ray player would be nice bc it would have Regza link so I would only have to use one remote still!

Maybe this will be one step back to making some of the money back that Toshiba lost during the format war. I wish the all the best they are a good brand. :)
