Libya Eliminated by Egypt in Quarters at Arab Basketball Championships
AS expected, Libya’s adventure in the 9th Arab Basketball Champion-ship’s currently being held in Morocco (July 16-26) was halted when they were eliminated from the tournament at the quarterfinal stage by Egypt. The Pharaohs beat Libya 84-54 to proceed to the semi-finals with a 100 per cent record.

Libyan Youths Win First-Ever Match in World Handball Championships
The Libyan national youth handball team managed to win their first ever match in a World Championship when they defeated Venezuela by 38-29 after leading 18-11 at the interval in a Preliminary Round Group D tie at the 3rd Men’s Youth World Handball Championships 2009 in Tunisia. But then lost their next two matches, against Argentina, 20-28, and favourites Croatia 42-18.

Successful End to Arab Clubs Cycling Championships in Libya
THE Arab Clubs Cycling Championship, a tour that Libya hosted recently ended with the Libyan representatives, Ittihad Alanem Alaam (cyclists pictured) winning two gold medals after finishing the final stage of the event, the fifth, in second place to eventual winners Almohafaza of Syria.

Tarek Al-Tayeb Joins Saudi Arabia Club Al-Shabab for $1m
LIBYA’s best known still active footballer, Tarak Al-Tayeb has changed clubs but will still be playing professional football in Saudi Arabia. As of the coming football season he will play for Al-Shabab who reportedly have fork-ed out a $1,000,000 to sign him. He last played for Sudan’s Al Hilal.

League champions Al-Ittihad made it a League and Cup double this season in Libyan football after defeating Al-Tirsana 3-2 on penalties at the June 11 Stadium in Tripoli in the final of the Al-Fateh Cup competition

Al-Ittihad, Al-Tirsana Qualify for Final of Al-Fateh Cup
THE final of this season’s Al-Fateh Cup in Libya will be between newly crowned champions Al-Ittihad, Winners of the competition five times, and Al-Tirsana after both managed to qualify to the crunch match at the end of penalty-taking contests in their semi-final ties.

Mediterrannean Games: Libya Round Up Edition With One Gold and Six Bronze After Win in Football
Libya rounded up its participation in the 16th Mediterranean Games in Pescara, Italy by winning its seventh medal, bronze, to add to the one goal and five bronze won previous to this one when the football team beat France 8-7 in a penalty shoot-out in the match for third/fourth place.

While all eyes will be centred on Libya’s football team today as it plays for the bronze medal against France, it must be said that the current edition of the Mediterranean Games, the 16th that ends in Pescaa, Italy, Sunday, is by far the best ever for Libya that has won six medals, one gold and five bronze. Athletics has been the most successful event with four of the medals won in this sector.

Following the first day of athletics at the 16th Mediterranean Games in Pescara, Italy, there are great expectations for at least another medal Thursday evening, with two Libyans in the final of their respective events. One of them, Mohamed Khwaj, is even favourite to win gold in the 400m. He was fastest qualifier in his semi-final heat 46.15. Also through the final is Abubaker Eighatruni in the 800m.

On the fourth day of the 16th edition of the Mediterranean Games in Pescara, Italy, it was time for the Libyan beach volley players and golfers to make their debut. Though the bBach Volley lost all their matches in the preliminaries, they at least fought well and were never humiliated. They will again be in action today in three more matches.
