Department of Materials Science and Engineering

The Department of Materials Science and Engineering is one out of 25 departments of the university and one out of four in the Faculty of Chemistry and Materials Sciences. The other three departments of the faculty are Biotechnology and Chemical Technology, Chemistry, and Forest Products Technology. The department is renown for the quality of teaching given (top-ranking within the university in 2004-2006, top-ranking in 2007-2009 nominated by the Ministry of Education) and for the unreserved relations between our teachers and students. There are ten professors in the department which is responsible for the Degree Programme of Material Science and Engineering. There are about 500 Master of Science students at the department.

Research in materials science and engineering is focussed on the development constructive, functional and active materials and their industrial applications. In materials processing research we study utilization of primary and secondary raw materials, and, related to them, mechanical processes and phenomena and, additionally, systems for materials recycling. Our core areas are process thermodynamics and kinetics, fluid dynamics, and heat and mass transfer phenomena and their modelling.

As for the usability and applicability of materials we are studying new material solutions, e. g. for construction materials including metals, materials for energy technology, biomaterials, coatings and nanomaterials. Additionally, principal themes for us are developing applications for silicon technology and microsystems, and for electronic and magnetic materials.
