SAGE to publish Index on Censorship

commencing 2010

Los Angeles, London, New Delhi, Singapore and Washington DC (June 17, 2009) – SAGE and the Index on Censorship, Britain’s leading organization promoting freedom of expression, are delighted to announce that SAGE will publish the award-winning Magazine Index on Censorship from January 2010.

Launched in 1972, Index on Censorship is the only magazine devoted to protecting and promoting free expression. International in outlook, outspoken in comment, and publishing some of the world's finest writers, Index exposes stories that are suppressed, publishes banned writing, initiates debate and gives breadth to news that has often been “dumbed down” in the world's media.

“Where freedom of expression is denied around the world, Index seeks to make it possible to articulate those views and stimulate those debates; it offers a major contribution to those supporting free speech,” said Ziyad Marar, Deputy Managing Director and Publishing Director, SAGE. “The magazine seeks to challenge our understanding, promote and stimulate much-needed discussions. We’re very proud to be working with the editors and supporting advisory boards to raise the profile of this essential read.”

The new publishing arrangement reflects major changes at Index on Censorship, with an emphasis on increasing the profile of the important work it does. Jo Glanville, Editor of Index, said: “This is a new era for Index. We’re very excited about working with SAGE and reaching a far wider readership.”

Closely associated with the charitable work of the Writers and Scholars Educational Trust, both the magazine and the organization strive to make public the circumstances of those who are silenced in their own countries, wherever that may be. Every issue of Index since its inception has included a 30-page, country-by-country index recording violations of free speech. These lists remain as extensive today as when the magazine was founded 33 years ago, and are a trenchant reminder that continuing vigilance is essential. Index was recently voted Consumer Magazine of the Year in the Periodicals category at the prestigious Amnesty International UK Media Awards 2008.
