First year student Alex Platis took Professor Wurtzler’s “Gateway: Introduction to Critical Methods” class this year as a way to transition into Georgetown academic life while studying something in which he was already interested: film.

“I have been interested in film since my early teens, and this class was a way to satisfy my Gateway English requirement while learning about a subject that I am passionate about,” he explained.

The native of Sandy, Utah, benefitted from the different facets of Wurtzler’s class, including learning about diverse cinematic genres. He also appreciated talking about film with other students.

“I enjoyed how Professor Wurtzler exposed students to different forms of film, not just the traditional Hollywood narrative,” he said. “We studied experimental, documentary, digital, and foreign films. My favorite part of the class was the discussion after film screenings. Professor Wurtzler guided the discussions, but provided an open atmosphere where students shared their insights and learned from each other.”

Alex is considering majoring in Government and English, and works with the DC Schools Project and College Democrats.
