Pre-Weekend Event Project Rebirth: Understanding Our Common Bonds of Loss
With President John J. DeGioia and Filmmaker Jim Whitaker

Project Rebirth is a documentary depicting the strength of the human spirit in the aftermath of Sept. 11, 2001. The film uses time-lapse photography at Ground Zero to record the hour-by-hour redevelopment of the site while chronicling the lives of 10 people grieving from the trauma. Attend a 30-minute screening of Project Rebirth, followed by a discussion with filmmaker Jim Whitaker (C'90) and Georgetown President John J. DeGioia. Georgetown Professor Jan Karski: Giving Voice to the Holocaust
Panel discussion & reception

Attend a special event at the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in New York in honor of Georgetown professor and legendary Holocaust-era figure Jan Karski (G’52, H’83). While an emissary for the Polish underground, Karski risked his life to make known the persecution of Jews and is now revered as the first to tell the Allied powers about their plight. Hear stories about Dr. Karski and his impact on the world from panelists Krzysztof Kasprzyk, consul general of Poland; Karl Cerny, Georgetown professor emeritus of government; Pat Quinn (F’71), governor of Illinois; and Carol Harrison (F’73), fine art photographer. During an accompanying dedication ceremony, the New York City Mayor's Office will officially rename the corner of Madison Avenue and 37th Street “Jan Karski Corner.” Reception to follow.

With Gen. George W. Casey Jr., chief of staff of the U.S. Army, and retired Marine Gen. James L. Jones, White House national security adviser

President DeGioia will officially welcome you to the John Carroll Weekend on the U.S.S. Intrepid, one of the most distinguished warships in U.S. history. Now a national historic landmark, the ship reopened in November after a two-year renovation. John Carroll Weekend participants will have exclusive access to the ship as they gather to celebrate all who have served the nation in uniform. Accompanying a military ceremony and musical performance, special tribute will be paid to two four-star generals and Georgetown alumni, Gen. George W. Casey Jr. (F'70), and Gen. James L. Jones (F'66, H'02).

This program will provide attendees a behind-the-scenes briefing on the plans for the memorial and museum that together exemplify the response to the attacks and the way we as a nation are learning from, remembering and honoring Sept. 11, 2001.

Explore the history, art and architecture of Catholic New York from the tip of Manhattan to the Upper East Side. Georgetown Athletics will present a panel discussion on Georgetown's profound impact on the world of sports. The discussion will include the formation of character and leadership through the student-athlete experience; how intercollegiate athletics prepares students for future leadership roles; and how Georgetown’s undergraduate experience has prepared students to enter careers in professional sports.

In the New York Public Library's grand lobby, Astor Hall, gather for an intimate celebration of the majestic Beaux-Arts building and its former president, the late Timothy S. Healy, S.J. After Fr. Healy concluded his notable tenure as president of Georgetown from 1976 to 1989, he returned to his native New York to assume the presidency of the New York Public Library. At both Georgetown and the library, Fr. Healy was known for his vision, determination, charisma, humor and lifelong commitment to learning. Guests will receive a second edition of A Commonplace, a collection of Fr. Healy's own words and those of his favorite authors, as a gift from the Georgetown University Alumni Association.

Wake up early on Saturday to join members of the Spiked Shoe Club - alumni, supporters and friends of Georgetown track and field - for a "fun run" (or walk!) in Central Park. All levels of runners and walkers are welcome to participate in this 5K event, which will begin at the New York Athletic Club. The top finishers will receive a prize, and all participants will receive a Georgetown Fun Run t-shirt. Breakfast will be served at the athletic club after the event.

His lecture will concentrate on works from the Met's collections that treat the great themes of Eastertide: the Resurrection, the new gathering of the Lord's disciples, the Ascension and the gift of the Spirit at Pentecost. While parents take the guided tour, younger guests will explore the Met through scavenger hunts and hands-on art projects led by Diane Apostolos-Cappadona, adjunct professor of religious art and cultural history at Georgetown (recommended for ages 8-10). Meanwhile, younger children will enjoy listening to Dogs' Night, a story about mischievous dogs that live in paintings at a museum. After hunting for dogs in the Met's own collections, they will finish with a canine-themed art project (recommended for ages 4-7). Museum docents and university staff will assist with child care.

Mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral

Vice President for Mission and Ministry Philip L. Boroughs, S.J., will serve as co-celebrant of Sunday Mass at beautiful St. Patrick's Cathedral. The largest Neo-Gothic Catholic cathedral in the United States, St. Patrick's represents an early piece of Georgetown history. It stands on the former site of the New York Literary Institution, a school for boys intended to serve as a preparatory school for Georgetown in the early 1800s.
