Centre for Social Work Research (CSWR)

Introduction

Tavistock Centre

The Centre for Social Work Research (CSWR) aims to make a significant contribution to the generation of knowledge in social work, and to enhance research in the profession. In collaboration with the Tavistock Clinic, the Centre offers a distinctive approach to relationship based approaches to social work practice and policy, psycho social approaches to understanding individuals, society and institutions and inter- or multi-disciplinary perspectives on social work practice. These aims will be met through developing and undertaking relevant research and disseminating this through written publications, conferences and seminars. Through its research and training programmes, the Centre aims to widen the participation of social work practitioners in research and the generation of relevant, relationship-based practice knowledge.

The Centre’s research is strongly influenced by the commitment in social work in the University to psycho-social ‘relationship based’ practice in collaboration with the Tavistock Clinic’s tradition for research that explores the underlying processes of practice from a psychoanalytic and systemic perspective.

'"The distinctive nature of social work research is the opportunity it creates for the research focus to be relevant to practice and the research to have a high potential for translation into practice"
(Developing the evidence base for social work and social care practice: SCIE Using Knowledge in Social Care Report 10. Peter Marsh and Mike Fisher)

Drawing on the wider tradition of the Tavistock method of inquiry and applying this to contemporary practice and policy contexts, CSWR aims to develop innovative methodologies, and new thinking about critical issues in social policy and social work practice. By generating research evidence CSWR aims to influence practice, professional training and policy.

CSWR is unique in Britain in providing this perspective, harnessing the psychosocial, multidisciplinary tradition to initiate creative social work research.

Research within the Centre is organised in four groupings:
