Project Rebirth is a documentary depicting the strength of the human spirit in the aftermath of Sept. 11, 2001. The film uses time-lapse photography at Ground Zero to record the hour-by-hour redevelopment of the site while chronicling the lives of 10 people grieving from the trauma. Attend a 30-minute screening of Project Rebirth, followed by a discussion with filmmaker Jim Whitaker (C'90) and Georgetown President John J. DeGioia. Georgetown Professor Jan Karski: Giving Voice to the Holocaust
Panel discussion & reception

Attend a special event at the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in New York in honor of Georgetown professor and legendary Holocaust-era figure Jan Karski (G’52, H’83). While an emissary for the Polish underground, Karski risked his life to make known the persecution of Jews and is now revered as the first to tell the Allied powers about their plight. Hear stories about Dr. Karski and his impact on the world from panelists Krzysztof Kasprzyk, consul general of Poland; Maciej Kozlowski, deputy director of the Department of Africa and Middle East at the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and former ambassador of Poland to Israel; Karl Cerny, Georgetown professor emeritus of government; and Carol Harrison (F’73), fine art photographer.* During an accompanying dedication ceremony, the New York City Mayor's Office will officially rename the corner of Madison Avenue and 37th Street “Jan Karski Corner.” Reception to follow.

Georgetown Athletics will present a panel discussion on Georgetown's profound impact on the world of sports. Moderated by Rich Battista (B’86), president of Fox National Cable Networks, the discussion will include the formation of character and leadership through the student-athlete experience; how intercollegiate athletics prepares students for future leadership roles; and how Georgetown’s undergraduate experience has prepared students to enter careers in professional sports.

New York Public Library Reception Honoring Timothy S. Healy, S.J.

In the New York Public Library's grand lobby, Astor Hall, gather for an intimate celebration of the majestic Beaux-Arts building and its former president, the late Timothy S. Healy, S.J. After Fr. Healy concluded his notable tenure as president of Georgetown from 1976 to 1989, he returned to his native New York to assume the presidency of the New York Public Library. At both Georgetown and the library, Fr. Healy was known for his vision, determination, charisma, humor and lifelong commitment to learning. President Bill Clinton (F’68) will receive the Timothy S. Healy, S.J. Award, only the second award ever bestowed in recognition of outstanding contributions by an alumnus toward the advancement of humanity. Guests will receive a second edition of A Commonplace, a collection of Fr. Healy's own words and those of his favorite authors, as a gift from the Georgetown University Alumni Association.

While parents take the guided tour, younger guests will explore the Met through scavenger hunts and hands-on art projects led by Diane Apostolos-Cappadona, adjunct professor of religious art and cultural history at Georgetown (recommended for ages 8-10). Meanwhile, younger children will enjoy listening to Dogs' Night, a story about mischievous dogs that live in paintings at a museum. Vice President for Mission and Ministry Philip L. Boroughs, S.J., will serve as co-celebrant of Sunday Mass at beautiful St. Patrick's Cathedral. The largest Neo-Gothic Catholic cathedral in the United States, St. Patrick's represents an early piece of Georgetown history. It stands on the former site of the New York Literary Institution, a school for boys intended to serve as a preparatory school for Georgetown in the early 1800s.
