Ombudsperson

At a University with over 15,000 students, students may not know where to turn for help when an issue arises. Some common problems deal with registration, making payment arrangements, parking, housing, and other University community related issues. Recognizing that you may face difficulties throughout the year, the University has identified a group of Troubleshooters and a University Ombudsperson to assist you.

University Troubleshooters
Troubleshooters are faculty members and administrators who serve as a resource for students seeking assistance with academic and non-academic matters. When regular channels have failed to bring resolution to your problem and after you have spoken to the appropriate Troubleshooter, you should contact the Ombudsperson.

University Ombudsperson
The Ombudsperson listens to student grievances, investigates the facts surrounding the grievances, and attempts to objectively make recommendations on how best to resolve the issue. The Ombudsperson is impartial, private, and informal. The Ombudsperson will not be an advocate or critic but considers the rights and interests of all parties concerned and advocates for a fair resolution. The Ombudsperson will consider the rights and obligations of the student and the University of Miami. Also, the issues presented remain in confidence upon the student’s request unless otherwise required by University of Miami policies and procedures. The Ombudsperson works with students to explore options and assists them in establishing communication with appropriate campus departments and offices.

The Ombudsperson:

  • Answers questions or refers students to someone who can help
  • Interprets University of Miami policies and procedures and offers guidance
  • Recommends changes in policies and procedures when necessary
  • Mediates conflicts when requested
  • Provides educational programs for the campus community on negotiation, mediation, and conflict resolution

Speaking with the Ombudsperson may help clarify your thoughts or feelings about a situation and increase your awareness of alternatives. You may contact the Ombudsperson by calling 305-284-4922 or via email at ombudsperson@miami.edu.
