Former CFO of Motorola, David Devonshire, conducts lecture for MPS Technology Management students at Clarendon Campus

David Devonshire addresses MPS Technology Management Students

Dr. Robert Rovinsky, MPS Technology Management Faculty Member, Dr. Beverly Magda, MPS Technology Management Associate Dean, and David Devonshire
Students and faculty gathered at the Clarendon campus of Georgetown University for a lecture by David Devonshire, lead principal adviser to Harrison Street Strategic Services, L.P. and former Chief Financial Officer of Motorola from 2002 to 2007. Devonshire played a prominent role in the company’s turnaround. As a result of his performance at Motorola, Devonshire was recognized as one of the 100 most influential people in finance by Treasury and Risk Magazine and was also recognized as one of the top chief financial officers in 2005, 2006, and 2007 by Institutional Investor magazine.

The students in the Master’s of Professional Studies in Technology Management course, Financial Analysis for Managers led by instructor Dr. Robert Rovinsky, were enthralled with Devonshire’s discussion of “Transforming the CFO Function”. Devonshire discussed how leadership, teamwork, attitude, organization skills, and common sense are key components of any successful organization.

Devonshire began his lecture with an overview of his history with Motorola and what he sees at the future of a growing, global workforce. “The days of large offices are gone. With today’s technology, companies can be more mobile” noted Devonshire.

The discussion was also an opportunity for students and guests to network with and ask questions of the former CFO. Devonshire discussed his working relationship with technology leaders and told the audience to be sure when approaching the CFO about funding for technology projects to “...understand the risks and opportunities of success of the project. Also, know what interlopers could interfere with the project success”.
