You're Doing a Heck of a Job, Janet

What's Your Reaction:
digg Share this on Facebook Huffpost - stumble reddit del.ico.us RSS

Remember when President Bush told FEMA Director Michael Brown he was doing a heck of a job with the Hurricane Katrina response? Now comes Janet Napolitano.

Napolitano's characterization and subsequent spin that "the system worked" in the case of Umar Farouk Abdulmuttalab's Detroit terror scare proves that she isn't qualified to be the head of Homeland Security in a post-9/11 world. The Christmas Day terrorism scare over Detroit was a test and she failed it.

Roughly eight years has passed since 2,973 people were killed on September 11, 2001 because terrorists boarded a plane and used it as a weapon. This week, another terrorist successfully boarded a plane with the intent of using it as a weapon against Americans - just like on September 11, 2001. And Janet Napolitano, the woman charged with keeping us safe, thinks all went well. We are lucky that Abdulmuttalab's bomb failed to go off as he planned. We are also lucky to find out now that Napolitano isn't equipped to lead a massive agency designed to keep us safe from international terrorists. Napolitano should resign and if she fails to do so then President Obama should ask for her resignation and replace her immediately. Napolitano should be replaced before she has to deal with an incident far greater than the one she just glossed over. Whatever her spin is now of her initial reaction to a major terrorist breach of security isn't sufficient. Americans have lost faith in Janet Napolitano.

It's not that Napolitano wasn't a good Arizona Attorney General or Governor - she may well have been. Since I have never lived in Arizona I don't have an opinion on her tenure and legacy. But the idea that a politician is equipped to lead a national agency charged with keeping Americans safe just because she worked her way up the Arizona political ladder is naïve and dangerous. Being the Secretary of Homeland Security is a serious job that requires thoughtful expertise in complicated international issues and shouldn't be a political reward. Napolitano doesn't have the international experience or the anti-terrorism background needed to lead an agency with over 200,000 employees and a budget of more than $50 billion. Napolitano's experience in immigration and border issues from her days in Arizona equip her for the United States Border Control Agency or Immigration and Customs Enforcement. But it is clear that she isn't qualified to be Secretary of Homeland Security. With politics being what it is - patronage for political colleagues - she flew through the confirmation process with little questioning from the Democratically controlled Senate. Most Americans now have lost faith in her ability to keep us safe from terrorists in the sky or on land. She has proven to be a weak link in a critical role and President Obama should let her go.

But don't count on a rational decision coming out of the White House on this issue anytime soon. It took President Obama 3 full days to break away from his Hawaii trip to respond to this serious breach in security that affects every American. When Obama finally spoke about the incident he said, "We will not rest until we find all who were involved and hold them accountable." Of course, he did rest and for 3 days. Americans would have more confidence in President Obama and Janet Napolitano if he would have spoken these words immediately after the incident instead of golfing in Hawaii and lounging poolside for several days; and if she would have ordered an immediate review of all airline security procedures - not suggested that all went as planned. The idea that a large airliner was almost blown from the sky if not for luck and our President went to play golf without speaking to nervous Americans is scary enough but sending out his Secretary of Homeland Security to tell us all went well is even more troubling. We want to believe the President when he said on February 23, 2009, "My highest priority is to keep the American people safe." But if his top priority is to keep us safe from terrorists then he needs to replace an obvious weak link in the system.

Luck and luck alone averted a major terrorist attack on American soil on Christmas Day 2009. And the Obama team failed to take the incident seriously. A full four days after the foiled attack someone in the Administration finally got around to requesting a full review of airline procedures. It is pretty clear that the Obama team isn't as experienced in fighting terrorism as they should be. Less than a year into the Obama Administration's term and its clear we need some change in leadership - Napolitano must go.

This is just silly. You are comparing one sentence that Napolitano imprudently said shortly after the event happened with someone who let New Orleans sink.

The director of an agency is responsible for it, but she does not look over the shoulder of every employee. Before calling for dismissals, we should know exactly what was the problem, not little media moments. If anything is bad for security, it is changing directors every year because of gotcha moments.

Leave aside whether Napolitano is doing a good job or not for the moment and deal with reality: Every once in a while, bad shit is going to happen. It's going to happen because there will always be bad people, and statistically, we're never going to stop all of them. And a failure to imbibe this reality, is what makes reactionaries like you, the far bigger threat to this country. This country is NOT a place, it's an idea. An idea wholly antithetical to the kind of mindless "sky is falling" panic that people like you, try to use, to destroy the idea.

I am willing to accept that bad things happen. Furthermore, I am NEVER willing to trade my liberties, for the promise of safety, nor should anyone else who actually understands what America is supposed to be.

I cringed when Napolitano made the comment. I cringed further when Rachael Maddow tried to reportray it with tortured logic. It's all strawmen; "the system" will always be breachable, but people who exploit fear, are less tolerable than any failure.

I lean heavily in favor of liberty over security. On anything that's politically a real issue, we should favor liberty over the promise of security. We should treat terrorism as a risk, much like any other risk of hostile action. We should accept, both intellectually and emotionally, that whatever system we put in place to protect us, it will be fallible: some risk will remain.

However, I can't make an absolute statement of liberty over security because I don't think there is any such thing as absolute freedom. It would entail a total inability to make any binding commitments, because such commitments would be *binding*, i.e. a limitation on one's freedom. It would entail not having any nature, any essence, because one is constrained to act in accordance with one's nature. It would entail not having any interactions with any other entity, because such to be acted upon is to have your freedom limited by whoever or whatever acts on you.

Limitations on liberty are always matters of degree, no more susceptible to total elimination than risk is.

My question: how can we best express the sentiment "I am NEVER willing to trade my liberties for the promise of safety," so that the phrasing will be as correct as the sentiment clearly is?

When the odds of my being killed by an act of terror, increase to the 100-1 range, then maybe I'd worry enough about it to trade away certain liberties. Maybe. Maybe I'd take my chances at 20-1. But as it stands, any one of us is about a thousand times more likely to be killed by a bolt of lightening, than a terrorist, and that makes any attempt to wrest civil liberties from the people, on the precept, wholly disingenuous and in fact, nefarious.

I can't draw an absolute line in the sand, nor do I think the current paradigm warrants that one needs to be drawn. It is enough if the populace can comprehend the current absurdity of the debate itself, and have the sense to reject it resoundingly. At this point it shouldn't even be up for debate, and that it is, only lends unwarranted credibility to those who's intentions are clearly totalitarian.

"Napolitano's characterization and subsequent spin that "the system worked" in the case of Umar Farouk Abdulmuttalab's Detroit terror scare proves that she isn't qualified to be the head of Homeland Security"

No, it doesn't.

Maybe she isn't qualified, but a staggeringly boneheaded remark doesn't prove it.

You get the job qualifications you insist on, and sooner or later you wind up missing out on something else. I would rather have a head of Homeland Security who's a competent administrator and an incompetent politician, than vice versa.

For me, the certain failure here was in Amsterdam. While everyone is wringing their hands over full body scanners, I want to see some answers about the obvious redflags: 1-way ticket, cash, no luggage, no passport. Let's start there.

I have been puzzled why Mr. UFA waited with his planned attack until the plane was almost at Detroit's airport instead of above the Atlantic Ocean where a successful demolition of the plane would have been hard to trace definitively to Al Qaeda. Was it the intent that the damaged plane should crash into the city?

What would Al Qaeda gain from a plane crash that apparently just happened because of some unknown mechanical failure?

It will come down to-------If Cat Stevens is on the "no-fly list" why was Abdulmattalab(whose own father reported that he was involved with extremists) not listed as well. If the fathers assertions were noted by the CIA at the alleged meeting with the father, someone will have to answer for it.

I hear all this cr*p about the massive 500,000 name list and how unwieldy it is.

I write databse programs professionally, and i can tell ya that 500k records is nothing. I have clients whose data exceeds 1.5 million records, and we can pull complex extracts in a couple of seconds.

If the gov't. can't manage to weave data sources, they can contact me. I'll do it for $150k.

Having some opinions that are at least somewhat radical, even if that fact is reported by your own father, is not sufficient justification for no-fly status. According to the NY Times, the NCTC made the decision on Nov 22 that there wasn't information on him that would have justified putting him on the smaller lists.
http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2009/12/31/us/20091231-terror-leads.html

I don't know what got Cat Stevens on a no-fly list, so I can't comment on whether that decision was correct.

I think Janet should step down. She is doing a very poor job. She can't even get the illegal alines out of this Country, how can she protect our Country from those who want to destroy us. Let's get someone in there who can protect this Country and get the illegal aliens out of this Country!

Political correctness has destroyed our nation, there is nothing correct about political correctness. Napolitano does not want to secure our borders to prevent terrorist attacks. DHS has targeted patriotic Americans as the enemy. Our true enemy are Muslims and those who want to destroy our nation to establish a one world communist dictatorship police state also known as the new world order. This enemy also refer to themselves by many names such as progressives, socialists, communists and marxists, they have infiltrated and taken control of the Democratic party. They remain in power through bribery and a corrupt media that destroy any candidate that will represent the people over big business, wall street and the international mafia banksters. The controlled media did not report on Climategate, the biggest ripoff scam in the history of the world. Anybody that believes the climate change/CO2 propaganda that has been spewed out by the United Nations either need to hear the truth behind this conspiracy or they are just plain stupid. The entire scam was created to tax everything we use to create a brutal police state, dictatorship world government. If they get their carbon taxes we all will live in extreme poverty while giving this corrupt government total control over every aspect of our lives. Most people will be eliminated by them, only select slaves will be kept for their agenda. Anybody who wants to go along with their plans need to check into the nearest mental hospital.

Good article, but in the last paragraph, the term "foiled" isn't accurate. The plot wasn't foiled (thwarted by outside influence)...it was BOTCHED.

You're correct that "foiled" isn't what the author clearly intended. But we don't actually know for sure that the attack wasn't foiled. Maybe someone fed an Al Qaeda cell bogus information on how to make an underwear bomb. Maybe Al Qaeda had to adjust their design to avoid detection, and that's why the bomb fizzled.

I listened to Napolitano and heard her discussing how the system worked after the fact, not that it worked in the screening process. This she seemed unclear about since the facts were not in and she stated that things were now being looked at to determine what happened. I think all those complaining about her should go back and listen to what she was asked and what she said. The expectation that people should have immediate answers without time to fact check is ludicrous. The Republicans are becoming more and more disgusting as they attempt to destroy Obama and the Dems but they are the ones who are truly unpatriotic. This is not a partisan issue at all. It is a serious breech in our system which was put in place by the Bush administration. Now, maybe Obama can make it better. He seems to be the one that has to clean up all of the Bush messes left behind.

And, Napolitano was 100% correct in her assessment of the extrmeists in this country who are becoming radical in their attempts to harm other Americans and especially the president. Those folks are very active in their attempts and extremely dangerous. Terrorism comes in many shapes and sizes. Skinheads, neo-nazis and some teabaggers come to mind. Many have become quite mainstream and fit right in as they do their damage. Don't fool yourselves.

I agree. Lots of complaining now. And I believe that Obama was getting all his facts and info before talking to the American people. When he speaks promptly he is attacked, when he waits for all the info to come in, he is attacked. He can't win with some people.

No more flying until the following actions are taken:

1. Everyone puts on scrubs for flying (after cavity checks). No other clothes, except flip-flops. Same for employees.
2. No luggage. Of any kind. Ever.
3. Everyone is given laxatives two hours before flight. No BM at the gate, no boarding pass. (Who knows what you've got in a balloon in your gut?)
4. Two words: background checks. Only those with sufficient character references may fly. Those with ethnic names may find the process considerably slower...

Once you land, you're on your own. Drive safely.

Under Richard Grenell's byline is "Spokesman for the last 4 U.S. Ambassadors to the UN." You would think with that description he must be bipartisan, but Mr. Grenell was appointed in 2001 by GW Bush, and those 4 ambassadors were all neo-con Bush appointees.

Thank You for putting the context on this article. One of the author's former bosses was that stellar UN Ambassador, John Bolton.

Grenell also wrote on the Huffintonpost on 11/4/08 - Why Obama will Lose Today...
"The mainstream media did everything they could to knock off Hillary Clinton in the Primary Election and John McCain in the General Election in order to help elect Barack Obama the 44th President of the United States. Fortunately, their attempt to convince the American people that the inexperienced and untested Junior Senator from Illinois was qualified to be President has backfired."

If it walks like a Neocon and quacks like a Neocon, it has to be one.
