Community Service Initiative

Center for Social Justice Research, Teaching and Service

Georgetown educates women and men to be reflective lifelong learners, to be responsible and active participants in civic life and to live generously in service to others.

-Excerpt from the Georgetown University Mission Statement

Each year, the John Carroll Weekend planning committee selects an organization to support that reflects Georgetown's Jesuit mission of service to others. This year's community service initiative will support an office essential to the university's core, Georgetown's own Center for Social Justice Research, Teaching and Service (CSJ).

Since its founding in January 2001, CSJ has represented the central unit on Main Campus for supporting and developing Georgetown's long tradition of helping make a difference in the community -- locally, nationally and globally. With a dynamic staff of 11, the commitment of 11 CSJ Fellows and more than 40 vibrant student organizations, CSJ is a beacon for students and faculty seeking deep, engaging work with and for others -- starting right here in Washington, D.C. In collaboration with others on Main Campus, the Law Center and the Medical Center, CSJ provides structured opportunities to learn about social justice through courses, research and service. Read more about the Center for Social Justice at http://socialjustice.georgetown.edu.

At the 2010 John Carroll Weekend, come discover how the current generation of students is getting engaged in service in Washington, D.C., through the CSJ and the many ways in which alumni have continued that service tradition in their lives today.

Please consider donating books or other educational materials to help D.C. Reads and D.C. Schools

The D.C. Reads and D.C. Schools tutoring programs, two of the many Center for Social Justice programs, pair low-income D.C. youth and adults with Georgetown students who are passionate about teaching reading and English language skills.

These programs have compiled an Amazon wish list of most-needed educational tools-including books, DVDs, printers and other classroom materials-so you can easily select an item (or few), purchase and ship your gift directly to the Center for Social Justice in just a few easy clicks. Just click here (or search for the "2010 John Carroll Weekend" wish list), select your chosen item(s) and ship them to the pre-entered Center for Social Justice address. CSJ will then distribute the items to D.C. Reads and D.C. Schools participants. Thank you for supporting these outstanding programs!
