Research centers, institutes and programs

Georgetown is home to several national research centers, including the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate (CARA), the Center for the Study of Learning, the Prince Alwaleed bin Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding, Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Joseph P. and Rose F. Kennedy Institute of Ethics (KIE), and the Center for Trauma and the Community. In addition, our faculty engage in scholarly research, most often in association with graduate or undergraduate programs and departments.

Our distinguished faculty include renowned U.S. and international professionals who bring to the classroom a lifetime of experience. Dedicated to the art of teaching, of sharing knowledge and skills of their disciplines, the faculty are also deeply involved in the work of making and applying new knowledge through research.

Research opportunities

The University provides opportunities for students to participate in research and scholarly endeavors, through programs including the Georgetown Undergraduate Research Opportunities, Carroll Fellows Initiative, and Hughes Scholars, as well as in individual academic departments and programs. The Graduate School of Arts & Sciences assists graduate students seeking extramural research funding and exploring new fields of research that cross traditional disciplinary boundaries.

Libraries

The University libraries are the intellectual backbone for research activities at Georgetown. Collectively, seven libraries provide access to 2.4 million volumes and 35,000 print and electronic journals. Students and faculty also have borrowing privileges with the Washington Library Research Consortium and enhanced access to the Library of Congress.

Lately for Dr. Zofia Zukowska and her team of researchers, there is much to smile about, due in great part to a recent award from the National Institutes of Health for her research on the sympathetic nervous system, which includes the effects of chronic stress on neuropeptide Y (NPY).
