Health Advisory: H1N1 influenza - Study Abroad Students

Georgetown Law students may, during any particular semester, be studying abroad at one of ten or more locations around the world.  Depending on local conditions and circumstances, the steps recommended to address H1N1 issues may be different in each setting. This page contains general information that is applicable in most cases, as well as guidance for finding more detailed information relevant to specific locations.  Assistance is also available from the Office of Transnational Programs by contacting Deputy Director Cara Morris at +1 202-662-9860 or woltemat@law.georgetown.edu

What to do *before* you feel ill

  • Familiarize yourself, through your local Study Abroad contact, with the location of health care facilities and service providers available to foreign students at your location.  Ask if they can describe to you now the specific plan or protocol to be followed in case you experience flu-like symptoms later during your stay.

  • Visit the International SOS “Pandemic Preparedness” website to review their country status reports and travel advice.

  • Buy a thermometer (preferably digital), to facilitate diagnosis if you feel ill later on.

What to do if you experience flu-like symptoms while abroad

  • Stay home and do not return to class until you feel 100% well.

Exception:  If you are in a high-risk group and experience flu-like symptoms, do not stay home but work with your local Study Abroad contact and the Office of Transnational Programs (see below) to ensure you are seen by a healthcare services provider.
