Tip of the month: Turtle Wings
Turtle Wings?
Spring Cleaning: What about the "stuff" that's on old hard drives? Over the years, people wonder what to do with old computer gear, just like any other clutter. A company called Turtle Wings (based in the DC area) will sign for them and destroy them in an eco-friendly way.
Scam(s) of the month:
"Kneber" Botnet malware:
John Gilroy: PCWorld's Netwitness explains 'Kneber' Botnet attakcs on PCs that its Ian Paul says puts "the potential threat of last year's Conficker worm to shame." This malware is extremely difficult to detect but Paul reports that it can steal passwords and logins and that it has affected nearly 2500 corporate and government corporate networks globally.
Infoworld Comunist Randall C. Kennedy's Alter Ego
Bill Harlow: This is an epic tale and worth a complete read. You see, Randall C. Kennedy would often publish columns talking about Windows performance, citing studies from Devil Mountain Software and their CTO Craig Barth. In summary: Devil Mountain CTO Craig Barth is really InfoWorld columnist Randall C. Kennedy. Devil Mountain's software has potential privacy issues and the company isn't afraid to show off that it can peek into your systems. A high-profile customer that "Barth" uses to legitimize Devil Mountain's software says there is no large implementation of the application at the company.
