The Mystic Valley Charter School plans to transform the former Davidson Chevrolet property into athletic facilities.

A former car dealership and adjoining parking lot on Route 60 will be transformed into an athletic facility for students at Mystic Valley Charter School, school officials announced.

On Wednesday, the school closed on the purchase of the former Davidson Chevrolet site on Eastern Avenue (Route 60) in Malden. The 4-acre property will be used for indoor and outdoor athletic facilities, school spokesman Martin Gately confirmed on Wednesday.

The school's treasurer, Fran Brown, said the $4.4 million purchase marks the end of  the school's decade-long search for a large property in the area.

“We are excited by the potential this property has for the school and by the fact that geographically it is an exceptional fit,” he said.

The property, which was razed by the former owner as part of the sales agreement, is less than a mile from the school's Salem Street headquarters. City Councilor and MV board chairman Neil Kinnon said the size of the lot was also a selling point.

“The Davidson property is by far the largest piece of property that we have acquired and although we have preliminary plans, which we will release soon, it gives us significant long-term flexibility,” he said, adding that the redevelopment of the site would benefit abutting residents as well as students.

“[It will] be a benefit to the adjacent neighborhood and to the community at large,” he said.
