Senior Associate, Editor of policy brief series

Description:

POMED is currently soliciting applications for a Senior Associate who would edit and oversee a new policy brief series, as well as contribute to other projects. Candidates should be entrepreneurial individuals with a deep interest in U.S. foreign policy. They should possess knowledge of and experience in the Middle East as well as a commitment to POMED’s mission. They should have exceptionally strong writing skills.

This is a full-time position with a competitive salary and benefits. The Senior Associate will edit and oversee POMED’s new policy brief series. In addition, s/he will develop and manage a series of web-based and other initiatives focused on building policy dialogue with key non-governmental leaders in Egypt. The Senior Associate will have the opportunity to attend and contribute to three policy conferences in the Middle East; additional travel is also possible. S/he will be encouraged to comment widely in relevant publications and media outlets and to engage substantively with other researchers and think tanks in Washington. Finally, the Senior Associate will help develop project proposals and seek additional funding for POMED’s research efforts.

Responsibilities include:

- Edit series of policy briefs

  • Provide overall direction and development of the tone, quality and format for policy briefs
  • Edit, lay out, and publish articles
  • Develop contacts and roster of potential authors and contributors, and solicit articles for policy brief series

- Contribute to effort to build relationships and policy discussions with pro-reform allies in Egypt

  • Oversee development of new website, to include Arabic content and web 2.0 capacities, and contribute content for that website
  • Help develop new initiatives (including writing grant proposals) such as joint publications, translation projects, and videoconference events to stimulate policy-relevant dialogue between Washington and regional experts

- Oversee discussion sessions at POMED’s three Young Leaders Conferences in the Middle East and North Africa, and assist in drafting a short final report

  • Attend three conferences in the Middle East, including possibly Egypt, Kuwait and Morocco
  • Record notes from discussion sessions leading to creation of final recommendations
  • Assist with production of final report from MENA conferences

Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will have a graduate degree and at least three years of relevant work experience. They must have exceptionally strong writing skills and attention to detail. Substantive experience in journalism and/or in a professional editing role is highly desirable. Experience with web development, maintenance, and blogging is highly desirable. Successful candidates will demonstrate initiative and entrepreneurialism and/or have experience writing successful grant proposals. Candidates should have knowledge of and experience in the Middle East as well as a commitment to POMED’s mission. Some Arabic or Farsi language skills are required.

POMED Office Manager

Description:

POMED is currently soliciting applications for a part-time Office Manager. The Office Manager will focus primarily on bookkeeping, payroll, and development; however, opportunities to assist with other areas may arise. Candidates should possess knowledge of the Middle East as well as a commitment to POMED’s mission. This position is ideally suited for an entrepreneurial graduate student seeking to complement academic coursework or an internship with part-time paid employment. Office experience and attention to detail are essential.

The Office Manager will contribute to POMED’s overall growth by managing the organization’s bookkeeping and payroll systems, while assisting with other administrative tasks related to fundraising and development. The incoming staff member will be an integral part of our growing team, and opportunities will arise to contribute to various aspects of POMED programming. The position will involve substantial opportunities for professional development, including networking and training opportunities. This is a part-time salaried position.

Responsibilities include:

  • Coordinate with Bay Business Group to input revenue and expenditure information
  • Process timesheets and expense forms
  • Assist with creation of financial and narrative reports for donors
  • Manage correspondence with vendors and contributors
  • Support fundraising and development activities, including proposal writing and editing
  • Support other programming activities, including Washington dialogue events and new online initiatives

Qualifications:

Candidates must have at least 2 years office experience and a demonstrated record of excellence in their professional and academic careers. Candidates must possess knowledge of the Middle East and U.S. foreign policy. Must be able to work exceptionally well in a team environment. Experience with Quickbooks is desirable. Arabic language skills are preferred but not required. Website development and/or maintenance experience is preferred but not required.

 Policy Interns

Description:

POMED is currently hiring Policy Interns for Summer 2010.  The internship offers a unique opportunity to not only observe what happens in the Washington policy community, but to take part. As a Policy Intern you will play a critical role in supporting our work by reporting on congressional hearings and other Washington policy events, writing for POMED’s blog and weekly digest,  representing POMED at various Washington functions, tracking legislation and Congressional votes, and conducting research on U.S. policy.

Qualifications:

Successful applicants will be bright, highly-motivated individuals with strong academic backgrounds and an interest in U.S. foreign policy as it relates to prospects for political reform in the Middle East. Dialogue Programs Assistant

Description:

POMED is hiring a Dialogue Programs Assistant for the Summer of 2010. The position provides a unique opportunity to impact debates over the future of U.S. policy towards the Middle East, build skills and knowledge, and interface with leading thinkers.

The Dialogue Programs Assistant will take lead responsibility for planning and executing panel and roundtable discussions in Washington, DC. Duties include formulating topics, reaching out to potential speakers, interfacing with partner organizations, coordinating publicity, managing event logistics, and writing summary publications. The purpose of these events is to further discussion about a critical issue among a wide range of analysts, activists, practitioners, and policymakers, with the goal of building knowledge and identifying consensus. In addition, the Dialogue Programs Assistant will have opportunities to publish short papers and assist in researching and publishing longer reports analyzing findings from POMED events and working groups.

Qualifications:

This position is ideally suited to outstanding graduate students focused on the Middle East and/or governance and democratization and interested in gaining practical experience in informing policymakers. Applicants who recently completed a bachelor’s degree are also welcome to apply.

The POMED Dialogue Programs Assistant is chosen each term through a highly competitive application process. Candidates should be deeply motivated individuals with a strong working knowledge of the policy debates surrounding U.S. impact on political reform in the Middle East. They should possess outstanding communication and organizational skills, be detail-oriented and be able to multi-task. Strong research skills are a must. Proficiency in Arabic (any dialect) and prior experience organizing and managing panel discussions or conferences are strong pluses. Candidates should be able to work from June through August 2010 on a part-time basis (20 hours per week). This internship is unpaid.
