Fallin Sworn In as State's First Female Governor

Tuesday January 11, 2011

With the light snow falling outside the state Capitol yesterday, it was an historic day for Oklahoma as Mary Fallin was sworn in, becoming the state's 27th governor and the first female to ever hold the position. In the Republican-dominated elections last November, Fallin won 60 percent of the vote to succeed popular Democrat Brad Henry, unable to seek a third term due to term limits. She will be just the 4th Republican to serve in Oklahoma's highest office since statehood.

The inauguration ceremony drew a crowd of about 1,200, smaller than anticipated due to the cold. In her speech, Fallin addressed issues of the state economy, education, budget problems and tax incentives for businesses, among other things. "It is crystal clear in my mind from my experience as a public official that we do not need more government; what we need is better government," she said. "My administration will be focused on creating jobs, growing our state economy, not our state government."

Where in the Metro?

Monday January 10, 2011

It looks like Kat was able to stump everyone with her submission last week. Kat says that was taken at NW 63rd and Kelley at the Oklahoma National Guard Regional Training Institute. Here's a new one for this week that shouldn't give you too much trouble. It's not a great picture due to the lighting, but do you know where in the metro it was taken? Post your guesses below.

Remember that you can participate as well. If you have an image of a spot in Oklahoma City, just send it my way and identify it as "Where in the Metro."

Winter Weather Arrives

Sunday January 9, 2011

For the Oklahoma City area, it won't be anything like what we saw a little over a year ago when everyone in the metro was iced in, but two winter storms will hit the state on Sunday and Monday, potentially creating some hazardous conditions. First, there will be the extreme cold. Wind chills are expected to dip below zero, so you'll want to make sure your home is winterized to handle it.

And sometimes, smaller amounts of precipitation can be worse in that drivers can have a false sense of security. To be safe, make sure you're aware of the area snow routes and check current road conditions along your route. Remember that bridges and overpasses ice first and that you should always apply brakes with slow and steady pressure in winter conditions.  AAA Oklahoma also recommends bringing a car emergency kit just in case.
