Weekend Plans: The Play's the Thing

Thursday August 26, 2010

I just got back from what I can only describe as a nasty, hot, windy, bike ride and decided that this weekend might be a good time to visit an air-conditioned, smog-free theater. There are a lot of good prospects for comfortable theater watching in SLC and around the state this weekend:

  • The Salt Lake Acting Company presents its "Fearless Fringe Festival" this Friday through Sunday, Aug. 27-29. The festival promotes SLAC's mission to develop vital new work and features three new plays by local playwrights: Yoga Confidential by Stephen Brown, Sam I Was by Sam Wessels and The Harvey Girls by Julie Jensen.

  • The Utah Shakespearean Festival continues this weekend and wraps up its summer season next weekend with Macbeth, The Merchant of Venice, Much Ado About Nothing, Great Expectations, Pride and Prejudice and The 39 Steps. The festival's fall season runs Sept. 16-Oct. 23 with The Adventures of Pericles, The Diary of Anne Frank and Greater Tuna.

  • Hale Centre Theatre's zany production of The Pirates of Penzance runs now through Sept. 25 and features great voices, broad comic performances, and beautiful sets and costumes. I saw the show last night and had a lot of fun - watch for a full review soon.

SLC Prep Teams Hit Big Time Venues This Weekend

Tuesday August 24, 2010

Most of Salt Lake's high schools start the new year this week, and back-to-school season brings the unique excitement of high school football. Four Salt Lake area prep teams will have a chance to play at two of SLC's top sports venues this weekend:

  • The Bingham Miners will take on their arch-rivals the Alta Hawks at Rice-Eccles Stadium Saturday, Aug. 28 at 5 p.m. The Miners, last year's 5A champions and number nine in the CBS sports national rankings, are 1-o after pounding Viewmont 51-0 last Friday. The Hawks, who were ranked number two behind the Miners in Utah preseason polls, are 0-1 after being upset by the Cottonwood Colts 28-21. Tickets for Bingham vs. Alta are $10 for adults and $5 for children high school age and under and can be purchased at the Rice-Eccles box office.
  • The Hillcrest Huskies will play the Murray Spartans at Rio Tinto Stadium Friday, Aug. 27 at 7:30 p.m. The Huskies are 1-0 after defeating Herriman High 17-7 last Friday. The Spartans are also 1-0 after a 28-10 win over Ogden. Tickets for Hillcrest vs. Murray are $9 for adults and $6 for children and are available online or at the Rio Tinto box office.

Featured Attraction: Rice-Eccles Stadium

Sunday August 22, 2010

University of Utah football starts Thursday, Sept. 2, and while nothing is certain in college football these days, it's a good bet that the Utes' farewell season in the Mountain West Conference will be one of the team's most exciting ever. The Utes play in Rice-Eccles stadium, a beautiful 45,000-seat stadium in the foothills of the Wasatch.
