Tip of the Month: Be Good to Yourself

Wednesday January 7, 2009

People with social anxiety disorder (SAD) tend to have a biased way of looking at themselves and the rest of the world. When it comes to themselves, they are harsh critics. When it comes to everyone else, they are full of forgiveness and praise. In other words, they are their own worst enemies.

This month's tip reminds you to be as good to yourself as you would to someone else. The next time a negative thought about yourself creeps in, imagine whether you would think that way about another person in your shoes. If not, at least give yourself the same consideration that you give to others.

Not Everyone Enjoys the Holidays

Wednesday December 24, 2008

This post is inspired by a recent article on the same topic. The author discusses how "Christmas is not a Happy Time for Everyone" in the context of social anxiety disorder (SAD).

I believe this to be true. A time of year that generally involves many more social obligations than usual can only put a strain on those who experience anxiety in the company of others. And for those that have become isolated, it can be a particularly lonely time as well. This week, I'd like to invite comments from readers about your experience of the holidays. Is this a happy time of year for you or not?
