Only some of my stories are being picked up by Google News. I can't find the problem. Report abuse

I have a self hosted wordpress blog and I was accepted into Google News.  I just noticed that not all of my stories are popping up after I post.  I use the google news plugin which did have an update on 11/11/09 to reflect the new changes needed for Google News.

I post all my stories the same way so I have no idea what would make this pick up some stories and not all.

My site is: http://www.accidentalsexiness.com

Please help!!

Hah, cute name :)

Actually, I don't see what's the issue: http://news.google.com/news/search?pz=1&cf=all&ned=us&hl=en&q=site%3Awww.accidentalsexiness.com&cf=all&scoring=n

Seems that the articles are indexed.

One thing which would be worth fixing is that the article titles on individual article pages are linked. (e.g. here: http://www.accidentalsexiness.com/2009/11/30/adrian-pasdar-visits-the-today-show/ the title is linked to the URL you're on)
You should make these non-clickable.

Thanks for the compliment!
Those articles that you see are the ones that are getting indexed but there are some in between those that are not.  One of which is the one you linked in your answer.

The ones missing are as follows:
http://www.accidentalsexiness.com/2009/11/29/colin-farrell-is-really-in-mexico/
http://www.accidentalsexiness.com/2009/11/29/heroes-on-the-scene-zachary-quinto-milo-ventimiglia/

I have no idea why those specific ones were excluded.  I am not sure what these omitted articles have in common.

I'm trying to understand what you mean by making them non-clickable?  Shouldn't the title be clickable?

Thank you so much for trying to help me.  Its very appreciated!! =)

Well, on that page (an individual article page) it shouldn't be clickable. It links to the same page you're already on, so what's the link's purpose, hm? :)
It's OK to have them linked on your home page or on category pages, but not on the articles' own page. This is a technical 'rule' Google News has.

If you don't understand what I mean - which wouldn't be a miracle since I'm not native English speaker (having an accent, too :P ) -, please direct your web designer here and he/she will know what I mean.

Also, the article I linked to above seems for me to be a bit short for Google News. But I guess if someone could fix the 'clickable titles' the article indexing issue would be gone.

By the way, here's another tip. Since you post loads of video, let me bring this Google News blog post to your attention: http://googlenewsblog.blogspot.com/2009/06/call-to-news-publishers-how-to-share.html

OK, seems today am a 'tips-factory'. It came to my ears that your news sitemap is not submitted to Webmaster Tools. So, again, let me bring to your attention a Help Center document which explains how to do it: http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=74289

In short: You do have a news sitemap but Google does not use it because it seems it's not submitted. So, please submit it following the steps documented in the entry I linked to above.

Sadly I'm my own webmaster and I am trying to work out what you mean.  Your English is excellent!  The reason I don't understand is due to my lack of knowledge in this area.

I am gonna ask around see if anyone knows about these clickable issues.  How could I re-submit the article after its fixed?

I verified the news sitemap and now its working.

I really can't thank you enough for taking the time for helping me.

OK, then let's figure out how can I help you with that linked title thing.

Can you edit the template files? I'm not sure where it is on Wordpress.com, but you should be able to edit it in the Themes menu if am not mistaken.
When you find the theme editing tool, tell me if you see a file called 'single.php' or something like that.

Coffee? No problem!  Yes I do have access to my files.  I know where single.php is.  I think I'm still trying to grasp which link you think I need to turn off?  The title?

One more example, I just posted this article and its not appearing! grrrr

http://www.accidentalsexiness.com/2009/11/30/spotted-dule-hill/

I don't know on what basis it picks out what it will post?!

OK then. Open up single.php and find the title of the article there. The title should look similar to this:

<h5><a href="<?php the_permalink() ?>" rel="bookmark" ?>"><?php the_title(); ?></a></h5>

Now make it look like this:

<h5><?php the_title(); ?></h5>

Probably the linked titles mess the things up. If the issue persist we'll look on other things too.

( +1 coffee ) :)

Ok I have done this.  I do not understand why this would make a difference?  Shouldn't the person be able to click on that link?  For example in case they want to link someone?

Also, how can I resubmit an article to google news once its already been missed.

(+2 coffee)

It depends which article has been missed. If it's in the sitemap and it hasn't been picked up then it's much likely the article is too short or too fragmented.
Could you check in Webmaster Tools you news sitemap's state, please? Is there any error reported?

Regarding the linking, the URL is already displayed in the browser's address bar so they can get it from there.

Even with the changes, I'm still not getting all my stories crawled.  For example:

http://www.accidentalsexiness.com/2009/12/01/dashboard-confessional-strolls-down-the-boulevard/
http://www.accidentalsexiness.com/2009/12/01/matt-damon-keeps-warm/

Any thoughts?

OK, cute-named publisher,

I was told that you still didn't create a Webmaster Tools account or didn't add www.accidentalsexiness.com to it thus your news sitemap is not used, thus I can not debug further.

Please, really please, create that Webmaster Tools account, add accidentalsexiness.com to it and submit that news sitemap you have.
You said "I verified the news sitemap and now its working[...]" 2 days ago thus I assumed that you submitted your news sitemap and I spent hours asking around why aren't your articles picked when you have a working sitemap. This is not constructive at all as you could forget all the issues since then or at least Webmaster Tools would've tell you exactly what's the issue with the articles which aren't indexed.

If you have issues creating the account at Webmaster Tools ( https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/home?hl=en ) or to add/verify your site, let me know and I help you with it.

I don't know who has said that I don't have an account with webmaster tools because I do.  Also I do have a submitted map that is verified.  I looked to where it says errors and it doesn't show an error with any of my missing articles.

Well, Google does not see you have a verified Webmaster Tools account for your domain name, that's why I asked if you need help creating it.
Accessing this page should take you to the news issues page; can you tell me what do you see please? (only and only you can access it)

https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/crawl-errors?hl=en&siteUrl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.accidentalsexiness.com%2F&tid=ne&sort=6

or

https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/crawl-errors?hl=en&siteUrl=http%3A%2F%2Faccidentalsexiness.com%2F&tid=ne&sort=6

One of them should work. Again, these are working only for you, they aren't working for anybody else, not even me

I have no idea why they don't show it.  I can show you a screencap of the webmaster tools page that show me as verified.  Not all the articles show in the error panel but many say, article fragmented.  What does this mean please?

OK, a screenshot would be cool. At least we can figure out why the articles are fragmented. Cut out your email address from the top-right corner of the shot please.

I don't think I can add a screenshot in this box.  Sorry but I have no idea how to do that!

Ya know, I'm looking through the list and I see more and more of them in there under article is fragmented.  They are just not listed in any kind of order.

Not sure if this helps but on a lot of the files that have 404 unreachable errors show my email addresses was added to the title of the post.  Does this make sense?

For example:
http://www.accidentalsexiness.com/2009/11/13/elijah-wood-takes-a-romantic-break/myname@mydomain.com

I don't know what its doing that?  Could that be giving me the errors?

You could upload it to flickr or picasaweb.google.com .

The "Article fragmented" error is a slippery snail with rheumatism, Alzheimer spiced with Parkinson...
In short it means that the article which got this error rather looks like a user generated content.
For example there are too many paragraphs and each one contains only a few words or sentences.

Better example:
Wrong:

"Emma Watson is in Argentina.

She was sun-bathing on the beach.

She looked unhappy."

Good-ish:

"Harry Potter star, Emma Watson was seen sun-bathing on a Jamaican beach 2 days ago with Jay Barrymore. Despite the sunshine and the classy company she does not look happy which is weird as she's always smiley for the camera.

The reason of the smile-less Thanksgiving holiday may be caused by her having difficulties explaining why she was photographed with a Spanish rock star just a few days before in New York. Interestingly, the rock star also happens to be a fellow student who accidentally shares the same interest with Emma: glamour.

Emma Watson,19, is taking a degree in art and literature at Brown University, while 26-year-old Mr Barrymore remains in London. The reunion seems to be a "break or make" event and judging by her facial expression, their relation might end soon.
"

Hmm, I didn't write for too long. The article above might be good for Google News, but from journalistic point of view it's not quite OK (i.e. even if it's news it contains precognition and novelistic elements)

Guess the differences are reflected though.

To answer your question about that email-weird-stuff-URL, that's caused by an incorrect anchor link on the left side of your pages, i think all the pages.

Go here: http://www.accidentalsexiness.com/2009/11/13/elijah-woods-takes-a-romantic-break/
Now look on the left side of the monitor; there are 4 small icons: contact, FB, Twitter and RSS. Now hover over the first icon, "contact" with your mouse. You will see in the status bar of your browser (bottom of a browser window) that the contact icon points to http://www . accidentalsexiness . com/ 2009/11/13/elijah-wood-takes-a-romantic-break/myname@mydomain.com rather than http://www.accidentalsexiness.com/2009/11/13/elijah-woods-takes-a-romantic-break/ . I'm not sure where those icons are coming from; they can come from a plugin or the theme itself, so I can't suggest a solution for it.
The bad thing is that it might cause issues very well.

Yes! Those are created from a plug in.  Google news is more important to me than those buttons so they are removed.  The majority of the issues in the error queue were from that!

No, unfortunately. These articles are pretty old for Google News; you can "send in" only articles published in the past 2 days.

Quick question, not all my stories are posting still!  Plus I've looked under webmaster tools and find no error.

example:
http://www.accidentalsexiness.com/2009/12/02/julian-mcmahon-goes-for-a-ride/

Any thoughts?

That seems to be a slightly short.
You're on Wordpress and below the posting form you can see how many words you have in an article. Try to have articles which have at least 100-110 words. The more the better.
