Two Young Adult Sisters Cope with Usher Syndrome

Friday March 12, 2010

Except for the typical line from a doctor about how a deaf child would not read above third grade level, I enjoyed this article about two sisters with Usher Syndrome.  The parents chose not to use sign language, focused on hearing aids, and later implanted their daughters. Now young adults, both girls are doing quite well.

You Can Hear Me. Your Ear's Just Lazy.

Wednesday March 10, 2010
As if parents of children with ear infections needed something else to be concerned about. Now comes the news that researchers have discovered that ear infections and fluid buildup in the ear that result in temporary hearing loss, can also actually result in a rewiring of the brain! The brain is involved in the hearing process, so this rewiring means that even after an ear infection is gone, a child could still have difficulty hearing.

The study was done with rats, but has implications for humans. It is not yet known if a "lazy ear" can be treated the same way a "lazy eye" is. (Anyone remember the eye patch episode in Peanuts?) It is possible the brain can re-wire itself to hear properly. As with any study, there are unknowns. However, if further study shows that there is definitely such a risk with childhood ear infections, this could increase the pressure on parents and doctors to treat the infections - and risk overuse of antibiotics.

SpongeBob and Dora Make Hearing Aids Attractive

Tuesday March 9, 2010
Today's deaf and hard of hearing kids have it SO good. Now they can choose earmolds with SpongeBob, Dora the Explorer, or other characters. Starkey Laboratories just signed a deal with Nickelodeon/Viacom to feature these figments of the imagination on co-branded earmolds. This may make kids more accepting of their earmolds. I have to admit, if Batman and Robin had been available on my earmolds when I was a kid, I might have looked forward to getting new earmolds instead of dreading it!

Instead of SSI...

Monday March 8, 2010
Kristy has posted a lengthy comment (comment #35) in response to the blog post "SSI and Deaf People" about what deaf people could do instead of being on SSI. Kristy feels that instead of spending so much on SSI, we should be working to get companies to hire deaf people; she also feels it should not be easy to get SSI. Do you agree with Kristy's points?
