Laundry Stain Removal Saturday: Crispy Pound Cake

Saturday May 22, 2010

As a Southern girl, I've made hundreds of pound cakes in every imaginable flavor - lemon, chocolate, butternut, brown sugar, cream cheese, sour cream, etc., etc. But last week, my best friend Dixie handed me another recipe that included whipped topping in the batter. Her daughter had made it and it had a lovely crispy crust. Give it a try and if you splash some batter on your apron (or shirt), just follow the links to remove the stains.

Crispy Pound Cake

  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 3 cups sugar
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 6 eggs
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 8 ounces frozen whipped topping, thawed

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Cream together butter and sugar. Sift flour before measuring. Add flour and eggs alternately to batter, starting and ending with flour. Fold in vanilla and whipped topping. Mix only until blended. Pour batter into a greased and floured 10-inch tube or Bundt pan. Bake for 1 hour and 15 minutes. Allow to cool in pan for 15 minutes. Turn onto cooling rack. Serves 12-16.

Teachable Moments in Laundry: Wrinkled Clothes in the Dryer

    Thursday May 20, 2010

Today is my son William's 24th birthday. He is a proud homeowner and has been doing his own laundry for many years. An avid Tweeter, he mused that he was missing some clothes. Well, it seems that he left a load in the dryer for several days. He also pointed out the irony that he is the son of the About.com Laundry Guide.

Luckily for him, he knows what to do. To take care of the wrinkles, thoroughly wet a hand towel and wring out the water. Toss it in the dryer with the wrinkled load and allow the dryer to run on high heat for about 5 to 10 minutes. The steam from the wet towel with loosen the wrinkles. Remove the clothes and fold or hang them up immediately. Problem solved.

    Happy Birthday, Bud!

    Laundry Detergents and Skin Conditions

    Wednesday May 19, 2010

Yesterday I wrote about the President's Panel on Cancer and their recommendations on how to reduce your risk of cancer by laundering clothing that has been exposed to chemicals separately from other family laundry. Today, let's talk about laundry detergents and skin conditions.

I have heard from so many of you about your sensitivity to certain detergents. It is quite frustrating when your favorite detergent and the one that never causes a skin problem disappears from the shelf. If you are having trouble with skin irritation, take a look at an article from Dr. Heather Brannon, About.com Guide to Dermatology. It may help you decide if that rash is caused by your laundry detergent.
