Master P To Judge At WGC Fight For Haiti MMA Event

Sunday April 4, 2010

The WGC is doing a great thing with their Fight For Haiti event, set to take place on April 9 from the Pasadena Convention Center in Pasadena, Texas.  All proceeds will go toward building schools for kids in Haiti.  Along with this, Master P (AKA- P. Miller) will be one of the judges at the event.

Of course, everyone out there knows that Haiti was hit by a terrible 7.0 earthquake on January 12, 2010.  Over 200,000 people in southern Haiti alone were killed.  MMA fighter Sam Hoger will headline the event, which will do its part toward helping the nation pick up the pieces.

Other celebrities slated to come are Vince Young, Chamillionaire, Kyle Lowry, Marcus Spears, Torrie Wilson, Michael Clayton, LeToya Luckett, and Mario Williams.  For more information, go to www.wgcfights.com.

Alistair Overeem Demolishes Dzevad Poturak By First Round KO

Saturday April 3, 2010

Alistair Overeem knocked Dzevad Poturak down with a right hook.  He basically outboxed his opponent, who was clearly undersized and overmatched, throughout their short fight.  And then he finished things with a right knee at the 2010 K-1 World Grand Prix.

Yep, that was that.

Next up for Overeem is a Strikeforce MMA match- not a kickboxing fight like this one- against Brett Rogers.  Overeem has simply been destroying people with his power, athleticism, and outstanding striking skills lately.  But Rogers will have a size advantage in their May 15 bout.

Will that make a difference?  We'll see.

Maybe Dan Hardy Should Have Come Away Impressed With St. Pierre

Friday April 2, 2010

You would be hard-pressed not to have heard someone complain about Georges St. Pierre's recent UFC 111 victory over Dan Hardy.  Too boring, all grappling, not enough action....Blah, blah, blah.  Well, add Hardy, a guy he absolutely dominated, to the list of those that were apparently unimpressed.

"[St-Pierre] just convinced me that he can keep me on the floor for 25 minutes," Hardy told MMAjunkie.com on Wednesday from Charlotte, N.C..  Then he went on to further note that "I was saying this in the buildup to the fight - 'GSP' doesn't take risks in his fights anymore.  He knew that my strength was striking and (within) 17 seconds of the first round, he shot in for a takedown. I think that says a lot about his approach to the fight game. He goes in there to win the fight and keep the belt and not to beat his opponent."

Well, here's a different viewpoint.  First, I love the fact that St. Pierre utilizes a smart game plan in his fights rather than the Ultimate Kickboxing mentality many are subscribing to today.  If an NFL football team knows they can run on a team but will have difficulty passing, will they pass just to make a point?  Doubt it.  The fact that St. Pierre took this fight to the ground, thus taking away Hardy's chances at winning, was exactly what he should've done.  If not, just call the sport Kickboxing.

Along with this, it would seem important to note that St. Pierre nearly stopped Hardy with two submission attempts that would've ended most clashes.  No, Hardy wasn't really beat up after the bout.  Sure, he showed a lot of toughness.  But St. Pierre was trying to finish the fight, just not how Hardy would've liked him to.

In the end, St. Pierre's performance wasn't the most exciting because he didn't end Hardy's day early.  That's a tribute to his opponent.  But making it sound like he doesn't come to win, that he didn't try to finish the fight (submissions, anyone?), or that his title defense at UFC 111 was even a close contest is ridiculous.

Hardy (and everyone else) should've come away impressed with Georges St. Pierre.  Right now, no one in the welterweight division looks as if they have any shot of beating the Canadian champion.
