The government of the United States, the government of Japan, and the African Union Commission hosted a Roundtable discussion on responsible agricultural investment (RAI) on April 25, 2010 in Washington, D.C., in close coordination with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), and the World Bank. More than 130 invited representatives attended the Roundtable from developing and developed country governments, multilateral institutions, the private sector and civil society.

Namibia was the fifth stop on my seven-country tour of Africa last week. Everywhere I went, I saw great examples of how our partnership with African countries is paying dividends. Today, Secretary Clinton announced the launch of Partners for a New Beginning, which will engage the private sector in outreach to Muslim communities around the world. This new initiative will be chaired by former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright. Its vice chairs will be Walter Isaacson, the president of the Aspen Institute, and Muhtar Kent, the chairman and CEO of the Coca-Cola Company. Secretary Clinton said:

On April 23, Under Secretary for Democracy and Global Affairs Mario Otero delivered opening remarks at the signing ceremony for the first Science and Technology Agreement between the Governments of the United States and the Republic of Serbia. Under Secretary Otero signed the agreement on behalf of the United States, while Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Science and Technological Development Mr. Bozidar Djelic signed on behalf of Serbia.
Under Secretary Otero said, "This agreement will open new doors, bringing scientists together and expanding the flow of knowledge between our two countries. This new agreement provides a framework under which our ministries, our institutes, our universities, and research centers can collaborate. Together, we will work towards new discoveries across the range -- a full range of scientific inquiry."
