American Experience

Television's most-watched history series, American Experience has been hailed as "peerless" (Wall Street Journal), "the most consistently enriching program on television" (Chicago Tribune), and "a beacon of intelligence and purpose" (Houston Chronicle). On air and online, the series brings to life the incredible characters and epic stories that have shaped America's past and present.

Into the Deep
watch a preview of into the deepIn a saga that is part sea adventure and part cautionary tale, American Experience chronicles three centuries of American whaling — from its local origins off Cape Cod to its stunning rise as a global economic force, and finally, to its precipitous decline.
Roads to Memphis
martin luther kingAmerican Experience tells the wildly disparate yet fatefully entwined stories of an assassin, James Earl Ray, and his target, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., as they headed for a violent and tragic collision in Memphis on April 4, 1968.
Earth Days
earth days posterIn Earth Days, acclaimed director Robert Stone traces the origins of the modern environmental movement through the eyes of nine Americans who propelled the movement from its beginnings in the 1950s to its moment of triumph in 1970 with the original Earth Day, and its current status as a major political force in America. Drawing heavily on eyewitness testimony and a wealth of never-before-seen archival footage, Stone examines the revolutionary achievements — and missed opportunities — of a decade of groundbreaking activism.

Is President Obama doing enough to protect the environment? Take our Earth Day polls and let us know what you think. Plus, learn more about our complex relationship with our planet through full-length Frontline and Nova reports, lectures by leading minds in the field of climate change, and more.
Victory in the Pacific
In this provocative, thorough examination of the final months of World War II, American Experience looks at the escalation of bloodletting from the vantage points of both Japanese and Americans. Despite warnings that his country, brought to its knees by the conflict, might erupt in a Communist revolution, Emperor Hirohito believed that one last decisive battle could reverse Japan's fortunes. From the US capture of the Mariana Islands through the firebombing of Tokyo and the dropping of the atomic bomb, Victory in the Pacific chronicles the dreadful and unprecedented loss of life and the decisions made by leaders on both sides that finally ended the war.

The Bombing of Germany
german city in ruinsOn Sept. 1, 1939 — the first day of World War II in Europe — President Franklin D. Roosevelt appealed to the warring nations to “under no circumstances undertake the bombardment from the air of civilian populations.” Just six years later, British and American Allied forces had carried out a bombing campaign of unprecedented might over Germany’s cities, claiming the lives of nearly half a million civilians. American Experience examines the defining moments of the offensive that led the US across a moral divide, tracing the evolution of divergent strategies and internal battles among the Allied forces. Weaving interviews with World War II pilots and historians with stunning archival footage of the bombing and its aftermath, the program is a haunting reminder of the dilemma imposed by war’s civilian casualties, a topic that continues to resonate as America enters the eighth year of fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Inventing LA
los angeles times posterTwo-time Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Peter Jones chronicles the epic saga of the most powerful family in Los Angeles history: the Chandlers. For four generations, they wielded unique influence through their newspaper, the Los Angeles Times — which, at its peak, had the world's largest daily circulation at 1.1 million. In their pursuit of personal agendas and civic ideals, they built the city of the future and exposed the dark side of the American Dream.

Your copy mechanism misrepresented my message. To clarify Ms. Biddle seemed understandably concerned about civilian casualties caused by American and British bombing of civilian targets in Germany during WWII. The percentages of the civilian populations who died in some European countries during WWII are Germany 2 percent Netherlands 2 percent Yugoslavia 3 percent Estonia 4 percent Latvia 7 percent Poland 7 percent Lithuania 8 percent USSR 8 percent Greece 10 percent. These percentages do not include civilians killed in the Jewish holocaust. If those civilians are included, the civilian death percentage in Poland rises to 16 percent. In addition, the civilian percentage WWII death rate in China, Korea, Malaya, the Dutch East Indies, Portuguese Timor, the Phillipines and the islands of the South Pacific that were occupied by the Japanese all exceed the civilian death rate in Japan (including Japanese civilian deaths in the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings) viz. less than 1 percent vs 2 to 10 percent. Information at http//en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_II_casualties Please forward this information to Ms. Biddle. Thank you Dwight Bramble
