The main task of the Riksbank’s IT Department is to provide cost-efficient, user-oriented IT support to the Bank’s different business areas. The department is responsible for the operation, maintenance, purchasing, development, change and adaptation of applications and systems, as well as for general IT security and the PC environment. The Riksbank's IT support is principally based on two technical platforms. Operations-critical systems such as the RIX payment system are run on UNIX platforms, while other systems are based on Windows. The Riksbank works with tried-and-tested IT solutions and mainly uses purchased standard systems.

The Riksbank’s IT vision serves as a guide for the department’s activities, indicating the direction for the Bank’s IT support. The IT vision was adopted by the Executive Board and includes an increased focus on support for information management in policy activities (structured document and data management), greater mobility and rationalisation with the aid of technical solutions. The relationship between the IT Department and the user departments is governed by a customer-supplier approach. This involves clear lines of contact between the departments and a focus on utility.
