Since its visionary beginning in 1789, Georgetown has engaged the broader world, created and disseminated knowledge in service to society, and encouraged students to develop their talents for the common good. Georgetown constantly strengthens its role as an institution with a global impact.

To further advance this vision, President John J. DeGioia is directing significant investments to the university's key asset – its students and their intellectual formation. Recognizing the financial strain that many families are encountering today and the continued rising costs of higher education across the nation, President DeGioia has identified scholarships as the top giving priority to achieve the university's mission. In September 2009, he announced an important new effort to support access and affordability at Georgetown through an initiative called the 1789 Scholarship Imperative.

The imperative calls for raising a minimum of $500 million by 2014 for the Georgetown Scholarship Program. Gifts of any size to the Georgetown Fund in support of the 1789 Scholarship Imperative will fund needed scholarships counted in increments of $25,000, which is the average scholarship award one student received this year.

"The goal is ambitious, but the need is significant, and the promise is vast," said President DeGioia when announcing the imperative.

Alumni, parents, and friends support the imperative when they make a gift to the Georgetown Fund.

The goal of a Georgetown education is to instill in students an awareness of the responsibilities of leadership, and an understanding of the world and the role they must play in improving it. By supporting the 1789 Scholarship Imperative with a gift to the Georgetown Fund, alumni, parents, and friends help Healy Gates remain open to the best and brightest and help the university fulfill its mission of preparing the leaders of tomorrow.
