World Health Organization Task Force on Ethics and Tuberculosis
The Issue in Brief
To respond to the growing concerns surrounding the re-emergence of tuberculosis (TB) and drug-resistant strains of TB, WHO assembled an Ethics Task Force that will provide strategic advice to WHO and the Stop-TB Partnership. Members of the O’Neill Institute were to join this Task Force. Additionally the O’Neill Institute will author a paper on Human Rights and Ethics in Public Health Measures for TB (TB, MDR-TB and XDR-TB) control.
A preliminary draft of this paper was submitted in July 2009. It was subsequently presented to the Task Force in August 2009. The O’Neill Institute presented a follow-up briefing on ethical issues at the annual meeting of the International Union for Tuberculosis and Lung Disease in December 2009. An academic publication will be developed in Spring 2010.
