Georgetown Physicist Contributes to First Demonstration of the Relationship Between Frustration and Entanglement of Trapped Atoms

Georgetown Physics faculty member, Jim Freericks, contributed to the theoretical work of an analog quantum simulator that illustrates the behavior of frustration and links that behavior to quantum entanglement. Physics department to host summer REU program

The physics department has been selected to host a Research Experiences for Undergraduates program. Students from around the country will spend the summer at Georgetown engaging in focused research projects in the area of materials physics, exploring the role of science and scientists in the arena of public policy, and participating in professional development activities. The program is funded by the National Science Foundation.

Georgetown wins a $6.9 M grant for construction of the New Science Center

southeast_approach.jpgLed by faculty from the Physics and Chemistry departments, Georgetown has won a $6.9 million dollar grant that will help with the construction of the New Science Center (NSC). The grant will fund the Institute for Soft Matter Synthesis and Metrology, I(SM)2, a special research facility to be contained with the NSC. The long-awaited construction of the building will begin on Feb. 1.
