Author

Describe your current position and what led you to your job:

I’m a published Author. I published my first children’s book – My Letter to President Barack Obama - in May of 2009. I’ve always felt a close connection with children. I spent many summers tutoring children, teaching at summer camps and more recently worked with a medical charity for Palestinian children.

What has been the most rewarding moment in your career?

Visiting schools and learning centers to host reading sessions for my book. The smiles and laughs as I read to the children; the comical and witty questions from the children afterwards; the positive feedback from librarians, teachers and parents.

What is the best career advice you have received?

Be patient.

What would you recommend to someone interested in working in your field?

It’s important to feel confident in your work. Don’t set unrealistic deadlines.

What challenges have you faced?

Book promotion is difficult… Bookstores are hesitant to accept books from independent publishers.

What skills are necessary or what prepared you the most for your career?

Imagination, creativity, a young spirit and discipline.

What professional associations have aided in your professional development?

The Georgetown Alumni Association has provided an overwhelming amount of support. I was invited to conduct a book reading session over reunion weekend. I was also invited to participate in the “Witness to History” oral video project.

If you could have another career what would it be?

I would love to lend my voice to a character in an animated film!
