More than 2,500 Georgetown alumni, students, faculty members and friends gathered in New York City for the 2009 John Carroll Weekend, the annual, four-day Georgetown celebration that features faculty-led tours and lectures, social events and a ceremony honoring alumni leaders. This year’s weekend welcomed more than 800 first-time attendees, and an increased number of young alumni participated in the festivities.

Thank you to all who helped make this year’s weekend a success, and mark your calendars today for John Carroll Weekend 2010 in Washington, D.C., on April 29 - May 2, 2010.

Weekend Highlights

Among the weekend’s most popular events was a reception held on the USS Intrepid, at which President John J. DeGioia and Mayor Michael Bloomberg welcomed John Carroll Weekend attendees to New York. They also honored four-star general Gen. George W. Casey Jr. (F’70) and all Georgetown alumni who have served the nation in uniform.

The following night, alumni paid tribute to Timothy S. Healy, S.J., former president of both Georgetown and the New York Public Library, at a special ceremony in the library’s Astor Hall, during which President Bill Clinton (F’68) received the Timothy S. Healy, S.J. Award. Later that night, young alumni gathered for a block party in the Financial District at a bar co-owned by a Hoya.

Highlights also included a panel and reception honoring former professor and legendary Holocaust-era figure Jan Karski (G’52, H’83) and a private tour and lunch at the United Nations with Mortara Distinguished Professor in the Practice of Diplomacy Madeleine Albright.

Georgetown President Emeritus Leo J. O'Donovan, S.J., professor of religious art and cultural history Diane Apostolos-Cappadona, professor of performing arts Robynn Stilwell and English professors Michael Collins and Maureen Corrigan led a variety of lectures and tours on New York’s diverse artistic, architectural, musical and literary histories.

Honoring the Accomplishments of Georgetown Alumni

At the weekend’s signature awards banquet, attendees paid tribute to five of the university's most distinguished alumni and one friend of the university with the 57th annual John Carroll and Patrick Healy awards recognizing lifetime achievement, outstanding community service and dedication to advancing Georgetown's mission of excellence, service and leadership. The weekend concluded with Mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral with Fr. Boroughs as co-celebrant. During the Mass, alumni received a special greeting from Archbishop Timothy Dolan, who just four days earlier had been installed in the Archdiocese of New York.

Second Annual Georgetown Global Forum

On Friday, April 17, John Carroll Weekend attendees joined distinguished global development leaders to share strategies for addressing some of the world’s most pressing challenges, including poverty, access to education, the economic crisis and global health. President Bill Clinton, founder of the William J. Clinton Foundation and 42nd President of the United States, and Dr. Muhammad Yunus, managing director of Grameen Bank and recipient of the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize, offered keynote addresses.
