New Dean of Public Policy Named
Georgetown University today announced Edward Montgomery will become dean of public policy, effective August 15. As dean, Montgomery will lead the Georgetown Public Policy Institute (GPPI).
Montgomery joins the Georgetown community from the Department of Labor, where he has served as executive director of White House Council for Auto Communities and Workers on the Presidential Task Force on the Auto Industry since spring 2009.

Our D.C. location and global presence and Catholic and Jesuit identity offer truly distinct resources as we expand upon our existing strength in public policy and respond to the changes and challenges of the 21st century.”
Housed within the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, GPPI has an enrollment of about 450 students and offers master’s of public policy, master’s of policy management and several policy-related certificates. In addition, GPPI includes more than a dozen research centers, organizations and projects dealing with today's most important policy issues while also recommending effective solutions.

Aside from his White House appointment, Montgomery has had a rich career in government and higher education. Before joining the Department of Labor, he served as dean of the University of Maryland's College of Behavioral and Social Sciences from 2003–2009, where he has also served as a professor of economics since 1990.
As dean of the University of Maryland’s largest college, Montgomery provided leadership over 11 academic departments offering a broad range of educational programs both at the College Park campus and in China. Montgomery strengthened the undergraduate experience at the college by reducing class sizes, expanding the use of classroom technology and increasing undergraduate internships. He also increased the college’s support for graduate student fellowships and expanded diversity outreach.
Prior to the University of Maryland, Montgomery served as deputy secretary and chief operating officer at the Department of Labor during the Clinton Administration. He holds a B.S. in economics with honors from Pennsylvania State University, as well as an A.M. and Ph.D. in economics from Harvard University.
Montgomery will replace William Gormley, who has served as GPPI’s interim dean since fall 2008.
