COMBINED STANDINGS (minimum 5 points per sport)
1. Florida
Points: 44 football, 33.5 basketball, 77.5 total
The buzz: Florida has two national football titles (2006 and '08) and two basketball crowns (2006 and '07) during the BCS era. No other school has won championships in both sports during that span.
2t. OHIO STATE
Points: 46 football, 18 basketball, 64 total
The buzz: The Buckeyes won a 2002 national football title and have come close to a few other championships. Ohio State reached the BCS championship game in 2006 and '07 and advanced to the NCAA tournament final in 2007.
2t. TEXAS
Points: 44 football, 20 basketball, 64 total
The buzz: Texas won a 2005 national title in football and reached the BCS championship game in 2009. The Longhorns also made the Final Four in 2003 and got to a regional final in 2006 and '08.
4. OKLAHOMA
Points: 44 football, 17 basketball, 61 total
The buzz: Oklahoma won the 2000 national title and reached the BCS championship game in 2003, '04 and '08. The Sooners also advanced to the Final Four in 2002 and reached regional finals in '03 and '09.
5. USC
Points: 49 football, 7 basketball, 56 total
The buzz: Advancing to a regional final in 2001 helped give this football heavyweight enough basketball points to qualify for the list. We gave USC the full 10 points for finishing atop the AP poll in 2003.
6. MICHIGAN STATE
Points: 6 football, 44.5 basketball, 50.5 total
The buzz: Michigan State won a basketball title in 2000, reached the championship game in 2009 and also advanced to the Final Four in 1999, 2005 and '10. Finishing seventh in the coaches' poll in 1999 helped give the Spartans enough football points to qualify.
7. LSU
Points: 35.5 football, 9 basketball, 44.5 total
The buzz: LSU won BCS football titles in 2003 and '07 and also earned a top-four ranking in 2006. The Tigers haven't been nearly as consistent in basketball, but they did reach the Final Four in 2006.
8t. TENNESSEE
Points: 26 football, 12 basketball, 38 total
The buzz: Tennessee won the first BCS national title in 1998 and also earned a top-four football ranking in 2001. In basketball, the Vols advanced to a regional final in 2010 and reached the Sweet 16 in 2000, '07 and '08.
8t. WISCONSIN
Points: 19.5 football, 18.5 basketball, 38 total
The buzz: Wisconsin finished fourth in the coaches' poll in 1999 and fifth in 2006. The Badgers also have reached the NCAA tournament each season in the BCS era and advanced to the Final Four in 2000.
10. UCLA
Points: 8.5 football, 25 basketball, 33.5 total
The buzz: UCLA reached the championship game of the 2006 NCAA tournament and advanced to the Final Four in '07 and '08. The Bruins haven't been nearly as successful in football, but they finished eighth in the coaches' poll in 1998 and 13th in 2005.
11. MARYLAND
Points: 6.5 football, 24 basketball, 30.5 total
The buzz: Maryland's No. 10 finish in the 2001 coaches' poll and No. 13 ranking in 2002 helped give the Terps enough points to qualify for this list. Maryland won the 2002 national basketball title and also made the Final Four in '01.
12. ALABAMA
Points: 23.5 football, 6 basketball, 29.5 total
The buzz: The reigning BCS national champions advanced to the Sweet 16 in 2004 and reached the NCAA tournament four other times in the BCS era. We gave Alabama two points in 2002 for its No. 11 ranking in the final AP poll, even though probation prevented the Tide from being included in the final coaches' poll. Even without those two points, Alabama would hold the same position in this chart.
13. ARIZONA
Points: 6 football, 21 basketball, 27 total
The buzz: Arizona's fourth-place finish in the 1998 coaches' poll helped give this traditional basketball power enough points to qualify for this list.
14. LOUISVILLE
Points: 11.5 football, 15 basketball, 26.5 total
The buzz: Louisville reached the 2005 Final Four and lost in a regional final in '08 and '09. In football, the Cardinals finished seventh in the coaches' poll in 2004 and '06.
15. WEST VIRGINIA
Points: 12.5 football, 12.5 basketball, 25 total
The buzz: West Virginia's football team finished in the top 10 of the coaches' poll in 2005, '06 and '07. The Mountaineers also reached a Final Four in 2010 and advanced to a regional final in 2005.
16. OREGON
Points: 17 football, 7.5 basketball, 24.5 total
The buzz: Oregon finished the 2001 football season second in the coaches' poll and reached regional basketball finals in 2002 and '07.
17. AUBURN
Points: 16.5 football, 5 basketball, 21.5 total
The buzz: Auburn's two Sweet 16 appearances (1999 and 2003) and one second-round loss (2000) gave the Tigers the bare minimum of basketball points necessary to qualify for this list. They've had much more success in football, highlighted by a second-place finish in the coaches' poll during their undefeated season of 2004.
18. GEORGIA TECH
Points: 10.5 football, 10 basketball, 20.5 total
The buzz: Georgia Tech never has finished higher than ninth in the football rankings during the BCS era, but the Yellow Jackets have reached a bowl game every season. They also were the NCAA basketball runners-up in 2004.
19. PITTSBURGH
Points: 5.5 football, 14.5 basketball, 20 total
The buzz: The Panthers have reached the NCAA tournament nine consecutive seasons, and they got over the qualifying mark in football after finishing the '09 season 15th in the coaches' poll.
20t. PURDUE
Points: 7 football, 12 basketball, 19 total
The buzz: Purdue advanced to a regional basketball final in 2000, reached the Sweet 16 three other times (1999, '09 and '10) and earned nine bowl bids in a 10-year span from 1998-2007.
20t. UTAH
Points: 12.5 football, 6.5 basketball, 19 total
The buzz: Utah finished fourth in the coaches' poll in 2008 and fifth in '04, and has made seven NCAA tournament appearances since 1999.
22. MISSOURI
Points: 8 football, 10 basketball, 18 total
The buzz: Missouri reached regional basketball finals in 2002 and '09, and its football team finished fifth in the coaches' poll in 2007 and 16th in 2008.
23. BOSTON COLLEGE
Points: 9 football, 7 basketball, 16 total
The buzz: Boston College never has finished a football season higher than 11th in the coaches' poll during the BCS era, but the Eagles have earned 11 consecutive bowl bids. They also advanced to the Sweet 16 in 2006.
24. WASHINGTON
Points: 7.5 football, 8 basketball, 15.5 total
The buzz: Washington finished the 2000 football season third in the coaches' poll and reached the Sweet 16 in 2005, '06 and '10.
25t. CINCINNATI
Points: 6.5 football, 7.5 basketball, 14 total
The buzz: Cincinnati has finished each of the past three football seasons in the national rankings and made the NCAA tournament every year from 1999-2005.
25t. NOTRE DAME
Points: 8 football, 6 basketball, 14 total
The buzz: Notre Dame finished 16th in the 2000 coaches' poll, placed 11th in the 2005 coaches' poll and reached the Sweet 16 in 2003.
27. TEXAS A&M;
Points: 6 football, 6 basketball, 12 total
The buzz: A&M; placed 13th in the 1998 coaches' poll and has earned bowl bids during seven other seasons in the BCS era. The Aggies also have one Sweet 16 berth (2007) and made four other second-round appearances in the past five NCAA tournaments.
28. N.C. STATE
Points: 5 football, 5.5 basketball, 10.5 total
The buzz: North Carolina State's football team finished 11th in the coaches' poll and has earned a total of seven bowl bids during the BCS era. The Wolfpack also reached the Sweet 16 in 2005 and advanced to the second round of the tournament three other times (2002, '04, '06).
