U.S. - Illinois - Chicago - International - Special Collections - Maps & GIS- Microforms
The Government Documents, Maps, and Microforms Department is responsible for several collections and services that cover a wide array of subject areas and formats. The Daley Library is a depository for publications from the United States Government through the Federal Depository Library Program and the State of Illinois. Depository status ensures receipt of the majority of important documents, though not all. The Library subscribes to publications of several international agencies and selectively purchases publications of other states and nations. Some of these Government publications are integrated into the general collections, but the greatest number of U.S. Federal Documents, Illinois State, and many city of Chicago publications (as well as selected number of publications from other local governments in the Chicago metropolitan region) are available in the Department.
U.S. Government Documents
The UIC Government Documents Department is a 90% selective depository library for US Government publications. The collection strengths include: US Bureau of the Census; HUD (Department of Housing and Urban Development); Congress; and DOE publications. Bibliographic records for US Government publications are available through UICCAT, the UIC Library online catalog. Although the library began collecting US Government publications in 1956, the Documents Department has acquired a strong historical collection including an almost complete U.S. Congressional Serial Set. The Department offers access to US Government information in all formats including CD-ROMs and information on the Internet, such as GPO Access.
Illinois Government Documents
UIC has been an Illinois State Depository since 1971. This collection includes publications from the General Assembly, as well as executive agencies and special commissions. There are some publications in the collection acquired prior to 1971. In addition, the Department collects laws, regulations, and court cases from Illinois. Illinois publications in microfiche/microfilm are located in the Microforms Department, Main Library, 2nd floor north.
Chicago & Northeastern Illinois Counties Government Documents
The Department is dedicated to acquiring local government information for the Chicagoland area. In addition to an extensive collection of Chicago government publications, the department also maintains a collection of local municipality (six-county area) publications, and publications from cities of similar size across the country. A microfiche set from the Index to Current Urban Documents is located in the Microforms Department (This covers Chicago and Cook County only).
International Government Documents
Foreign publications from embassies and consulates are located at the southeast corner of the 3rd floor. These publications date from 1993 to the present. United Nations publications are available in paper up to 1984. The Readex UN microfiche set is located in the Microforms Department and is also available from the licensed electronical database, UN Index - AccessUN.
Special Collections
The Department has developed, and participates in, a number of significant community service initiatives including the Earth Science Information Center (ESIC) system, and an initiative to provide public access to Department of Energy (DOE) information in the DOE Reading Room in the Main Library. The Department also houses supporting collections such as the Human Radiation experiment papers, the Northeastern Illinois Planning Commission (NIPC) documents, and materials from the American Planning Association (APA)
