'Toy Story' wins at the box office, while 'Grown Ups' scores and 'Knight & Day' lags behind

knight-and-day-beachImage Credit: Frank MasiToy Story 3 has dominated the box office for a second straight weekend, but Adam Sandler’s Grown Ups did some serious business, too. Knight & Day, meanwhile, did little to restore Tom Cruise as a summer box office draw. And the three films combined didn’t do enough to combat last year at this time, when Transformers 2 bowed to $109 million.

Toy Story dropped 46 percent, for a second-week take of $59 million. The film’s 10-day cume now stands at $226.5 million, making it the quickest Pixar movie to cross $200 million. The movie is likely to topple Pixar’s highest grossing flick, Finding Nemo, which topped out at $340 million back in 2003. Grown Ups did respectable business on its own. The broad Adam Sandler comedy bowed to $41 million but earned a B from audiences, according to CinemaScore. The film marks Sandler’s third-highest opening ever.

Knight & Day grossed $20.5 million for the three-day frame. The PG-13 rated film’s total gross now stands at $28 million (it opened on Wednesday) — not an auspicious beginning to a movie that cost more than $150 million. Audiences liked the film more than Grown Ups, according to CinemaScore, which gave the movie a B+. But whether or not it will continue to play in the marketplace remains a question. The Karate Kid continues to draw audiences. In its third weekend in release, the film earned another $15 million, a 48 percent drop, pushing its total gross to $135.6 million. The A-Team isn’t holding up as well in theaters. Earning $6 million its third weekend, the PG-13 rated actioner lost another 58 percent, for a total gross of $63 million.

The rest of the top 10 was dominated by holdovers, the most notable being tenth-place finisher Jonah Hex. The PG-13 rated flick from Warner Bros., which opened last weekend to a weak $5.3 million, lost 70 percent of its value its second frame. With only $1.6 million added to its coffers, the movie (starring Josh Brolin and Megan Fox) has now earned only $9.1 million.

Get Him to the Greek landed in the sixth spot, earning an additional $3 million, putting its total take at $54 million after four weekends in theaters. Shrek Forever After landed in seventh with $2.9 million and a total cume of $229 million. Prince of Persia: Sands of Time earned another $2.8 million for an eighth place finish and a total take of $86 million, while Killers took spot nine. The PG-13 rated film, which has a similar premise to Knight & Day, grossed $2 million, putting its four-week total at $44 million.

Check back this upcoming week when Twilight Saga: Eclipse comes roaring into theaters on Wednesday.

    Go Pixar Yay. :)

    • LOL

Grown Ups doing so well proves that people love crap.

      • Jango

….it took “Grown-Ups”, of all movies, to make you realize this??

Not Paul Blart, Twilight: New Moon, Beverly Hills Chihuahua, Kangaroo Jack, or Transformers 2?

Way to be late to the party chump.

      • Preston

But this is a typical Adam Sandler movie, the same tired juvenile, silly stuff that looks 5 years out of date that always performs well in peak box office seasons like winter and summer. And Kevin James dangling on a rope over a lake and running hard into a tree–he needs to stop getting in stupid roles and pap like this! Some of it looks like typical teen frat boy humor.

      • Jello

seriously LOL you need to change your name LOL sounds happy YOU are anything but. How about? Oh let me see… Oh yeah, Grouch It suits you.

      • Frat-tastic

Most typical teens are in high school, not butt-spanking, elephant-walking coalitions that mock Greece.

      • Ladyli1

        @Jango- I thank you.

    • Rosalie

Gone are the days when someone could command a 20 million dollar check to star in a movie. When did movies get so expensive to make? 9 times out of 10 I go and watch a movie, but I really don’t care for the special effects. I can watch a movie and use my imagination. Think about Ghostbusters in the 80′s. That was creativity, if you ask me. Anyow, I will go see Knight and Day because I think that both Cameron and Tom are good actors. Also, don’t think that they will run out of steam, dont forget that there is other markets outside the U.S. where they still make tons on money.

      • The Ween

I think the telling problem is that when I saw this movie, over 95% of the audience were women. I guess good looks and fond memories are enough to bring 1/2 the audience back.

      • SYR

        @ Rosalie-
Why would you watch a MOVIE to use your imagination, thats what books are for? You must have hated watching Avatar if you don’t watch movies for the special effects. Your nuts if you think Knight & Day has the legs to make more money, I give it a week, maybe 2 before its off the top ten. That movie released worldwide on the same day so its still not doing that great. Even if it some how makes another $100 million, it will still be considered a failure considering it cost $150 million to make. I hope this isn’t the mark of a failing Cruise, I also heard they are making a Less Grossman movie, sounds like another dailure to me…

      • Tina

The problem is too many movies focus on the special effects and not the plot. Tom Cruise kept bragging about doing all of his own stunts. Maybe he should have focused more on the actual acting and storyline! And, the shameless promotion of this film is only rivaled by Sex and the City 2. How about Hollywood producing a movie with an actual plot and good, solid acting? It would probably cost a lot less than $150 million.

  • Sharon

Shame. All those movies and their box office numbers will be put to shame when Eclipse comes out. Thousands of screaming girls, charging at various theaters…ugh. Even cute talking toys won’t be able to hold their own for the next week.

    • Bobby

The only positive is that it will only last a week and then it will be forgotten about.

    • nirveeze

Trust me, Eclipse won’t be a concern. With it opening on Wednesday, it’s actual weekend gross won’t be too impressive, it’ll already be lossing steam by Friday.

      • Big Walt

I don’t know, those crazies pay to watch it multiple times.

      • dee

True, Big Wait, but their allowance has to run out sometime. lol Plus, the moms probably have jobs to get to during the day.

    • Dave

True, Sharon. Eclipse will open big, but I don’t think it’s going to hurt Toy Story 3 too much. And don’t expect Eclipse to hold on the way Toy Story 3 is with a drop in the 40-50% range. Expect a 70% drop for Eclipse in its second weekend.

      • Emily

Toy Story appeals to all sexes and ages. The twlight movies only appeal to the fans of the books. I heard that since Knight and Day did not do to well that they are probably not going to do a Mission Imposible 4. But why can’t they just cast someone else more bankable to play the lead the movie if good can easily be a hit.

      • Ashleigh

@Emily: After the second movie, the twilight movies don’t even appeal to some of the fans of the books, and that’s saying something because the books seriously suck. I’m genuinely interested in the kind of business Breaking Dawn will do (especially the second installment…ugh) given that even many of the die-hard fans of the book series admit that “Breaking Dawn” was weird and crappy.

    • Hannah

Eclipse will make a LOT on Wednesday and Thursday, but the Twilight pattern is to open huge and then fall of a cliff. Even Twilight, which opened before the franchise really exploded, fell 65% on its second weekend.
Eclipse won’t drop that much, but ONLY because “opening weekend” is counted as the Friday-Sunday frame. If they tallied the Wednesday-Sunday take and compared it with the next weekend, the drop would be enormous.

    • Psychic

Don’t worry about Toy Story. Eclipse will do the vast majority of its 5-day business on Wednesday and Thursday. There’s plenty of opportunity for family films to do well over the weekend.

    • Preston

That’s true. Eclipse will really dwarf the other competition next week. It’s got that teen and young adult fan base on lock, versus the kid and male-driven action movies that’s typical of summer movie fare. But don’t hold off on Toy Story—it’ll most likely land at No. 2 next week and still pull in big audiences as Eclipse. And I’m sure it will still get audiences on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, not just Wednesday and Thursday. I’m surprised that there are moviegoers camping 7 days before this movie release on the 30th. But Knight and Day will have a huge drop, maybe 50 to 80 percent– Tom Cruise just isn’t pulling in the audiences like he did in the ’80s, ’90s and early 2000s, but I see it making over $180 to $200 million.

    • dee

I wouldn’t worry too much for TS3. It’s already made 226 million, and it’s only been out for two weeks. It’s nowhere near finished.

      • Emma

Yeah, compare it to New Moon, which made about 230 million in its first two weekends. I’d say TS3 is doing fairly well to almost meet that. Plus the drop in viewers was nowhere near as severe for TS3 as it was for New Moon. And New Moon had the advantage of a holiday weekend during its second week.

    • Mindy

Meh. Not worried at all for Toy Story 3. It will still ultimately outgross Twilight. Probably will start outgrossing Twilight by about Toy Story’s 5th weekend/ Twilight’s 3rd weekend.

    • Denise

All of you are forgetting “The Last Airbender” in your Eclipse v. Toy Story struggle. Toy Story probably won’t be on top next week. Not with both movies coming out.

      • G

And who exactly do you think is going to see “The Last Airbender”? All of my friends grew up in love the t.v. series and it is a symbol of our childhood.

However, all of us still agree that the movie is going to blow and none of us are gonna see it. If you can’t get hardcore fans the tv show to see it, it isn’t gonna do very well at all!

  • Chichi

I took my kids to see Toy Story 3 again and ran into some of the same faces that I saw on opening day, this movie is addicting. My hubby said Grown Ups was awful.

    • darclyte

      TS3 was awesome.
I wonder how people will end up ranking the 3 movies?
TS2 will probably finish 3rd on most lists, with either 1 or 3 will be on top.
It’s hard to decide now since I’ve seen TS1 so many times over the years, but TS3 probably brought out more emotions.
      PIXAR FTW!!!

      • RCB

Of course, all 3 movies are great. But I rank them as follows: TS3, TS2, TS1.

      • bryanbmp

        love the triology, my rank
        1. TS3
        2. TS2
        3. TS

hoping it gets strong legs against eclipse and airbender

      • Mindy

        I will rank them
        1. TS3
        2. TS
        3. TS2
But, I love them all. Wish I owned this one on DVD right now. I keep wanting to see it again. I am going to go broke seeing over and over in the theatre.

  • devin

Grown ups is as much fun as spending some time at facist day camp…

  • kevin

Knight and Day is the best movie I have seen all year! SO much fun, the dialogue is smart, Cruise and Diaz are wonderful, action is terrific, just a great time at the movies, I think it will hold well at the box office in the next couple weeks due to word of mouth, just a great movie.

    • @Nomentionofkev

      Is this damage control?

      • AQS

I didn’t love it AS much as kevin, but I definitely thought it was an enjoyable way to spent 2 hours on a hot summer afternoon. I think reviews have been unreasonably harsh, mixed with Cruise’s ongoing antics (which is a shame, because he exudes movie star charm in the flick). Hopefully it will hold on in the big b.o.; I rank it with Prince of Persia as the silly enjoyable summer blockbusters that unfortunately couldn’t draw an audience… Regardless, TWO THUMBS WAY UP FOR TOY STORY 3!!!

      • kevin

lol really not damage control, I just really enjoyed it! Very refreshing to go see a summer movie that is not a remake, not a sequel, not based on a book, comic, video game or bad 80′s tv show!

    • Kyrjar

      This sounds like paid marketing

      • kevin

hahaha its marketing, but I ain’t getting paid :( should I apply?

    • Shane

Are you the Knight & Day PR person?

  • Sam

I saw Splice. Great movie! There were parts during that movie that had my jaw on the floor. It’s rare that a movie can shock and surprise me as much as this one did. Also fun to watch with an audience because the reaction from the audience during one particular scene was priceless!

  • john

long before the couch, the ‘glib’, the brooke shields, the scientology tape leak, cruise was losing his box office appeal; as his films in general were costing more, but bringing in less at the box office. cruise has had an amazing career. he was a top ten box office draw for 20 years! out of those 20 years he was number one 7 times which is more than any other star ever. for some reason the media (again in general) has decided that now is the time for his comeback and that This is the film to propel that comeback, but the public is in rejection of that notion. the media seems bent on shoving cruise down everyone’s throat and the public (in general) is merely regurgitating hollywood’s hard sell. cruise will continue to be a star. he will continue to have a career, but the truth is he just isn’t the star he once was. 20 years with 7 at number one that is an incredible run. just how big is the hole in cruise’s ego that he must continue to win or at least attempt to win the attention of the public? how much reaffirmation and ego stroking does he need? when will hollywood realize that their plastic, manufactured star/golden boy has run his course?

    • John C.

Cruise had a modest hit with Valkyrie, and had a very small yet memorable role in Tropic Thunder that they’re spinning off into a Les Grossman movie. I don’t think he is the problem with Knight and Day. I think Cameron Diaz is. Her last movie ‘The Box’ was a complete failure. ‘My Sister’s Keeper’ before that didn’t break any box office records either. Her last hit was two years ago with ‘What Happens in Vegas. If you don’t count the Shrek movies she really hasn’t been in much to justify giving her the female lead in a 150 million dollar movie. With Mangold directing, Cruise starring, and someone like Rachel McAdams in Diaz’s role it might have done better business. Anyone who saw Vanilla Sky remembers that Cruise and Diaz had absolutely no chemistry, and she was an extremely unlikable character. Cruise is still a bankable actor. Cameron Diaz isn’t.

      • Jen

Interesting theory — actually it’s Diaz that’s making me hesitant to see this movie as I’ve always found her extremely unlikable. As for Tom Cruise, yeah he may be a nut, but he’s really not a bad actor and by all accounts he’s always been nice to his fans (unlike many other A list celebs), and lacks the general smug attitude of today’s current stars. I find it hard to hate him.

      • candacetx

Not trying to be insulting… but am I the only one that finds Cameron unattractive? She has not aged well since her Mask debut. Her eyes are too far apart, her smile too broad and nearly joker-like, and her body type is boyish. I will see Knight and Day despite Cameron….I do get tired of the media telling us who are attractive: people like SJP (who at least has impeccable style) or Kirsten Dunst, or Cameron and so on. These are moderately attractive women, I guess.. but hardly Eva Gardner or Marilyn Monroe classic beauties. (and before everyone piles on the hate responds…no, I am not a supermodel.. and my only qualification to make this comment are my two eyeballs and an opinion. Just thought it is a valid question to ask.)

      • Teri

Even in her heyday, I never found her that attractive. But as she’s gotten older – yuck. She’s a prime example of how too much sun exposure sun can turn your skin into leather.

      • candacetx

Thanks @Teri for a little affirmation. Remember when she supposedly “uglied” herself up for the role in Being John Malkovich? I honestly thought she looked the same…just with frizzy hair. Hardly the huge transformation (like the one Charlize Theron did for Monster…)

      • Mike

Hey, I actually agree with this . . . I’ve always liked Tom Cruise, even when it was hip to hate, but haven’t liked Cameron Diaz since The Mask.

      • Ashleigh

Lol, Hate to rain on the I-hate-Cameron-Diaz parade and the inevitable crapping on actresses’ looks that the public (who are no doubt perfect physical specimens themselves) gleefully partake in whenever women reach their upper 30s and dare to show age lines, but I think she is beautiful and a genuinely gifted comedic actress who, unfortunately, cares more about being commercial than finding interesting projects. However, she was hilarious in “There’s Something About Mary” and compelling in “Vanilla Sky” (never saw Being John MalKovich”). I also don’t think she’s aged any more poorly than Cruise who’s being spared pot shots. We should be glad she’s resisted the pressure to Botox her face. But these comments clearly show the damned if you do, damned if you don’t attitude people have towards actresses and plastic surgery. :-/

      • tricia

@John C- Vanilla Sky is the worst movie I have ever seen. Maybe that’s why I have no desire to see K&D.
I saw Grown ups over the weekend (saw Toy Story last weekend) & while it wasn’t the best movie I’ve ever seen, it was OK & about what I had expected. Some people actually clapped at the end of it!

    • Steven

“long before the couch, the ‘glib’, the Brooke shields, the Scientology tape leak, cruise was losing his box office appeal; as his films in general were costing more, but bringing in less at the box office.” -John

I have to disagree with John here. Cruises box office draw was doing very well before his glib & couch jumping antics began. Case in point:
-2002 Minority Report $353 million world box office.
-2003 Last Samurai $456 million world box office.
-2004 Collateral $217 million world box office.
-2005 War of the Worlds $591 million world box office.
-2006 MI3 397 million world box office. The movies he’s made after have all been bombs. Lions for Lambs, Valkyrie, and now it seems Knight and Day. The casting of Diaz couldn’t have helped the box office draw. I think the public just thinks Cruise is too “crazy” and can’t look past that to enjoy a movie. I think the major test will be the next Mission Impossible movie next year. If that bombs, he’s done as a movie star.

      • Preston

I don’t want to be rude, but Minority Report was AWFUL! Too much backward relapse nonsense that didn’t work for Tom Cruise!

      • Steven

You weren’t being rude. I was merely stating that Cruise’s movies did very well, before his media antics did him in. I personally didn’t think Minority Report was bad at all. But that’s just me.

      • Shane

Oh God, the memories of all the Minority Report plot holes is too much for me to handle!

      • poop

Whoa, slow down here. First of all, Valkyrie made $200 million, hardly a huge success, but definitely not a bomb. And secondly I thought Minority Report was awesome.

      • Jason

Collateral was one of the worst movies I have ever seen. I love when Jamie Fox goes to the top of the parking deck and is able to pick out Tom Cruise in the window of a skyscraper. Or when Tom Cruise throws a body out of an apartment and it doesn’t even dent the top of Jamie’s cab. Or the fact that Jamie’s first passenger of the night just happens to be Tom’s last hit of the night. Sorry for the rant – I hated that movie and critics heaped praise on it. I think I need a cigarette.

  • Jenny

Knight & Day was a great action movie that you can take your family to. I thought it was funny and that Cruise and Cameron worked great together. (But then I just go by the movie, not by the outside drama)

  • Psychic

I’m ready for Eclipse to come out. The sooner it opens, the sooner it can have a big opening day and then promptly fall off the face of the box-office earth as Twilight movies are wont to do. Then it’s an entire YEAR AND A HALF before the fourth film. It’ll be like a nice long vacation. :-D
And good for Toy Story. I love seeing quality movies make money. It tells studios that people are willing to pay to see smart, well-made movies.

  • Rick

Okay, yeah, Eclipse is the big movie opening this weekend, but lets not forget there is another movie coming out this week with a big, cult-like fanbase! I personally can not wait to see The Last Airbender on Thursday! With M. Night at the helm, the creators of the show being heavily involved in the writing and filming process, and the show being absolutely kick ass, I expect a lot out of this movie! I am hoping it does some good business this weekend!

    • @Rick

Thank you! What with EW falling all over itself to heap (overdone and annoying) praise and “anticipation omgz” on Eclipse, it’s completely ignored ANOTHER large-scale, popular and branded franchise film opening this week.
I thought it was interesting that the studio moved Airbender to Thursday. They must have reason to think it can make a decent amount of money over the four-day period; otherwise they’d've left it on Friday.
And like other people have said, Eclipse will have a massive Wednesday and then sputter to a halt once no one’s left to see it.

    • dee

Yup, I’m seeing Last Airbender, not Eclipse.

  • Nancy

I hope The A-Team gets some more viewers, maybe guys can go see it while their wives go to Eclipse. A-Team has really been underrated, I think, its a lot of fun and doesn’t try to be anything its not.

    • Sam

No thanks. Just because I’m a guy doesn’t mean I want to see trash. I need more than just explosions and loud noise to entertain me.

    • anonymous

Are you trolling? A lot of the praise I’ve seen for A-team has been from women. It’s not like it has to be one or the other.

    • tomm

With this flop, AT will not have a sequal!

  • Liam

Enjoyed Knight And Day immensely. Thought Grown Ups was terrible. I think Knight and Day will keep going on word of mouth. Everyone i talked to who has actually seen it like it. The media really wants us to hate Tom Cruise for some reason. Hopefully people can think for themselves.

    • Sara

There are actually many reasons to hate Tom Cruise.

  • TurKish Bacon

I saw Knight & Day and thought it was a lot of fun. I didn’t have many expectations for it but must admit that it was entertaining. My mate and I went specifically to see if we could still like Tom Cruise after all his wackiness, and I was surprised to find that we did. I think we still get squeamish when making out is involved but overall a really fun performance by both he and Cameron.

I second whoever said that the reviews are overly harsh. Summer movies are supposed to be entertaining and fun which this one was. I always find it interesting that the same critics that give a pass to Hot Tub Time Machine as meaningless entertainment, can’t do the same with Knight & Day. I reckon it makes a better story to diss massive stars.

  • jfms777

You knew “Knight” was in trouble when Diaz started discussing (in interviews) about (her) having sex with women. This did nothing for the movie–but it will probably
get her a ton of dates with women.

  • nick

inception is going be the 1 draw, leo and nolan toghether is going be like dead heath and nolan!
