The United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC) will hold a session tomorrow, 11 June, to consider the final report and recommendations on the human rights situation in Egypt. Earlier this year, the HRC discussed Egypt’s human rights record under its Universal Periodic Review (UPR) mechanism, established in 2006 to assess the rights situation in all countries of the world.

Hossam Bahgat, the Executive Director of the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Right, will be in Geneva to attend the session as an observer. He will be sending short updates on the proceedings of the session that will be posted on the EIPR’s website as well as our page on Twitter.

Out of a total of 165 recommendations, in the February session the Egyptian government accepted 119 recommendations (including many identical or similar ones) rejected 14 recommendations, mistakenly labeled seven recommendations as “factually incorrect”, and deferred consideration of 25 recommendations to the HRC session on 11 June 2010.
